So, I tamed a parasaur (newbie questions)
I tamed a parasaur, my first rideable dino, spent engram points on a saddle for him, and I'm not sure why he would be useful. I thought he might be able to help collect berries or something, but I don't know how to make that happen. I can't even use my weapons while riding and it doesn't seem that he can fight. Did I just tame a completely useless dinosaur?

Whats the earliest available useful dinosaur after dilos? I don't want to spend engrams on useless saddles.

Why are there level requirements for engrams? Isn't the point cost limiting enough?

So far, I have leveled up building things I needed, but at level 16 I'm seeing a phase where I just have to kill stuff for no reason except levelling. This is getting a bit grindy for my time requirements, but I still can't safely explore the island, which is my main goal for this game.

I have one more question about my base. It's on a riverside at the end of a canyon (The same canyon where there is a cave in the far south of the map.) The canyon goes east/west, while the river runs north/south. When I make my fence, can I or should I block the river too?

I have seen some spinosaurus to the north, but so far they haven't come this far south.

EDIT: Also, there is a nearby cliff I might incorporate into my walls. Is that possible or will there always be a gap between the wall and the cliff?

My frame rate makes the slingshot useless, and my Dilo pack tends to kill things rather quickly before I can call them off. Should I be able to run up and club them down? Seems dangerous.

Try to climb on a rock and fire with a slingshot in their face. With a club you won't have much success.
Make sure you have enough stones >50 and material to repair your slingshot. Also the rock needs to be big enough so the trike can't hit you on it (and it can't walk on it).

the update that makes dinos flee when they cant reach you might stop it the best way with a slingshot is get it stuck in trees or run around a big rock hitting it in face also wait 5 seconds for each hit so you do torpour damage not major health damage

This guy knows how it is.

Spinos are actually pretty passive. They are more interested in fish than you. I can only get a Spino to attack me if I run up to him. They don't even bother with Rexes.

It's the Sarco's you gotta watch for.

Block that canyon off but don't forget to put a wall along the top of that cliff too. About the last thing you want is for a predator to chase something off the cliff and land in your base with passive dinos.

It's really big cliff. Do Dino's take fall damage? I know I died from an ~8 foot drop.

Wild dinos don't take fall damage but tame ones do.

to take down bigger creatures early you gotta do as our hunter-gatherer ancestors did- piss it off, then climb up on a rock and shoot it in the face

Tamed Dinos only take fall damage if you are riding them, or jump off them mid air.
If your tamed Dino is following you, it will not take fall damage.

A trike will be very useful for collecting berries, being a tank, and a fighter.

Parasaurs DO collect very, very small amounts of berries. They can attack, but that's not their point. The parasaur is like a horse, you use it to get around and to carry stuff better than a Phiomia. I personally really like using parasaurs, and I think a good amount of Weight, Speed, and Stamina put into it makes a great mount for exploring the island early game.

I figured out how to get berries on it, you really have to look straight down almost. Not a very good berry collector though. :) hands are better.

I have one more question, If I block off the river with my walls, will it stop the spawning of coels within the new base boundary there? I get a lot of meat from those.

I'm not exactly sure, but it shouldn't. Coels don't seem to be affected by buildings placed around them.
