No Flyer Servers... Your Opinion??
Heya Everyone,

Just getting a quick community opinion on No Flyer/No Giga servers? With increased rates of about 3x. This is due to 95% of the pvp in Ark consisting of flyers grabbing players off other flyers, so I am thinking of bringing up a server with none however I wanna know what you all think? Obvious cons are... You can't fly and gaining Metal etc would take a little more work, however it does make the game more challenging and a lot less air based combat.

OP is asking for opinions, in this thread that was started over 1 year ago.

This is not a thread for advertising your server; there is a fourm for that: http://steamcommunity.com/app/346110/discussions/10/. If you are looking for a no fly server, the same forum will also serve that need.

This is the only warning.

No flying is all dandy and cool, but how do you proceed? Biggest issues is - what about all those kibbles requiring flyers eggs?
1. You either disable taming of those flyers (no eggs then and please, dont tell me that 1 ptero egg you randomly found week ago is enough)
2. or you can prevent their spawn totally (still no eggs at all)
3. you can just disable saddles (good way to get supply of kibble eggs, still makes land dinos obsolete > hop on frog, whistle 3 quetzals on follow > go gather metal, laugh)
4. make em untamable & remove saddles from drop loots but somehow fix kibble eggs need? how?

When I was thinking about implementing this, I though about the no flying option in caves. Could that be applied to whole server aka Island? That way, we could keep our flyer tames n sh*t, but have * no fly weekend* for example. Is there such a command to extend that from caves to whole map?
How do you tame a quetzal without flying after it?

yup this is definitely an old thread... many threads have been brought up regarding this and many players have done test regarding this. There are current private servers that do utilize this method. I ran one once and it was really intriguing. But the setup at that time was that you manually told the server to not allow specific pets to be tamed at all. If you disabled just the saddles then you would have to deal with beacons dropping the blueprints. But as of last month there was an update that would stop that.

Overall if you want to understand the reasoning behind disabling the birds, it forces players to work together as a team instead of single player, or single player but in a tribe. You have to actually fight your way to get resources, etc. Even setting up a camp to cook meat to heal yourself as you sit on a icy cold mountain. It does put survival back into the title of the game. So there are some fun factors with it. But again it's not for everyone.

Not saying people cannot disucss it. I basically said no advertising...aka no spam. So, not sure what you are even replying to. :D

And, I think it is a great topic. Have thought about running servers like that, or pushing air tames to a much higher level; but I can't get the others to bite.

When I restart on a server, I often avoid taming a bird until absolutely necessary, unless I happen to run across a 135+, then I have to go for it. Though, on my last restart, I lost 3 high level argy's to ground beasts. But, the game changes when you go from ground only to flying(or big dinos).

I do recall a situation on the no flyer server I did, we had a lowbie player with us when we were making a hike to get metal. We setup a camp where we could stay warm, cook food, etc until daytime hit again. The lowbie player died from frostbite which was good for everyone else cause his body provided fresh raw meat to cook and eat. It is fun, but I think most ppl just want dinos with lasers now.

but if you tell the story I did of survival and cannibalism it oddly works to convince others to play.

I figured people might want to try the game mode before they make their final opinion on the subject. ;)

Personally, I absoulutely dreaded it until we made the decision to go ahead and put one up.

The game is so much more interesting when you can't just fly around anywhere at will. You don't have to worry about randomly being picked off your mount every time you go out. Ground dinos actually have a purpose.

It actually feels like a survival game again. Like the feeling of those first few moments when you spawn in to the game absolutely terrified and not knowing what's going on. Get that feeling all over again when you run across a wild Giga and you can't just fly away from it, lol.

Also not sure how posting a link to another ark subforum is spam. Did not see anything in the guidelines prohibiting it. Sorry for the trouble.

I did a no fly playthrough with some friends on a private pve server but added the reusable grappling hook. It was soooo much fun zipping around like spiderman. Learned creative ways to get stuff done and used dinos we never would have. Turns out kangaroos are excellent pack muels for metal runs.
