This is a VERY challenging game when you are new and start low level. We all have died 1k plus times at low levels. Best thing to do is level as fast as you can buy just gathering nearby and killing dodo's. craft yourself a thatch hut 4x4 or so and build 3-5 campfires until the ice cube symbol goes away. Only go out in day time. Cooking meat and eating it gives you some HP back...berries only fill up your food meter. The grind at first seems like this is a stupid game. But once you have a base and dinos you only die to serious things like alpha dinos and pvp...stick through it...it's fun af

Actually, berries definitely fill water meter up too lol.

@OP: That being said, it's hard but survivable. I agree they made it a bit unbalanced, but just run back to your dead body to pick up what was lost, to get you some fires going. Stay warm in the fire, leave it long enough to grab stuff and not die, come back to fire, rinse and repeat. Trust me, this cold death for newbies thing all over the map isn't normal, but it's still in EA, so they're learning still. It really is way more fun once you get over that initial hump.

That being said, it's not impossible, and really not that difficult either. Hide armor is craftable early on and is the 2nd best armor for cold weather. As Arukoth said, work on leveling up until you unlock hide armor. Carry a torch, make campfires close together, standing torches, thatch huts. You have a lot of resources available to you.

Tame a Penguin. Knock it out, feed it Narcoberries and meat. they spawn all over the place now with the cold update. Keeping them close to you keeps you warmer.

This game is supposed to be a survival game. You should have expected it would be difficult to survive. If you do even just a few of these options you'll be fine...

You guys are just being babies.

First you recommend fur armor to newbies.
Then you recommend knocking a low health, high torpor penguin without a longneck rifle and darts -good luck with that.
Then you tell people they are babies.
Any other sage advice?

Yeah, if you're shooting a penguin in the face with a crossbow... you're an idiot. Club, pachy, bow with very little draw. If you kill 100 of them before you finally get one, who cares?

I started over at the beginning of this winter patch and had no problem whatsoever. You've played for 300 hours, if you still don't know what the hell you're doing you might want to try another game.

Step 1: Exit ARK.
Step 2: Play something else
Step 3: Wait until the event is over

When you play Singleplayer you could adjust the player's resistance (I think).

Since last patch I can survive from fresh spawn, heck I even run like half an hour with a new char to an existing base, pushing E all the time to gather berries on the fly (else you'll starve).
Running keeps you warmer than standing around.

So when you spawn, punch a tree, get 10 thatch, 1 wood and collect 1 stone and craft a stone pick, then gather flint with it and create a campfire. Put wood into the campfire and you've got fire. Next gather fiber from plants (you'll get berries > food/water [don't eat the black or white ones]) and craft cloth.

Always have these steps in mind, then you'll survive without thinking about what to do while you freeze.

anyone else sick of this? it was cool and cute for about 10 mins. now its just annoying. where's the beautiful Ark landscape and biomes? please give us ark back

i did help in development. i invested in the EA of this game. don't troll, it isn't cute

Its fine for me. I see trikes brontos everything like i saw before. I see penguins aswell.

some of it is nice yes. but i hate ambients and the availability of animals that should be difficult to get. instead now everyone can get pretty much everything
