Compies get bonuses the more you get but they can be hard to tame because they take prime meat. Not great for anyone just starting out because acquiring and keeping the prime fresh takes a bit of effort.
Dimorphodons are great because they are flyers and thus harder for enemies to hit. However, they can be difficult to knock out and require a surprising amount of narcotics for taming.
Dilos are generally the top pick for first dinos. Their ranged spitting attack slows enemies and deals damage. They are easy to find and easy to tame.
All that said, I have really liked the gigantos (the apes). They pack a punch, have great health, and are good solo fighters, where as the other dinos mentioned do better in groups of 3 or more.
I used to go slaying herds of brontos with a mate boosted pair and only lost them when they got seperated in a group of about 6 brontos. I wouldn't even join the fights.
A plus for the apes is they can wear human armor to boost their defenses.
A minus for them is that they eat berries and you can't regenerate health near as well as a meat eating creature by force feeding them (but again, their food doesn't spoil as quickly).
EDIT: Another minus is their taming. It's time consuming and can be ruined at any point by being attacked.
Of course, this is all personal experience and preference. Everyone is likely to have a different view on the matter.
Compys are stupid hard to tame, they require prime meat and when you attack one more will magically teleport in to help.
Dimorphodons are alright, but I've seen them get swatted far to easily and require more of them to be effect.
Dilos on the other hand, they're easy to tame. A couple can hold their own, get a pack of 5 or so and they become a force of nature. (unless they're all really low level) Plus they're about the size of a large dog.
You want a Dilo, they won't let you down. (unless all low levels)
