Have you tried using trang arrows instead of darts? Use one, wait 5-8 seconds, shoot again?

Is your melee damage really high?

The club is supposed to do 5 damage and 20 torpor - for a level 1 penguin (95 hp, 300 torpor) that's 15 hits to knock it out with 20 hp left over.

Maybe the clubs actually have a damage boost against penguins? That's weird stuff, I've never tried to use anything but tranq darts on a kairuku.

Clubs having a boost on the penguins would make sense because of the whole penguin clubbing thing.

I had a hard time initially with my tranq crossbow. It's a bit hit-and-miss. Fortunately my base is on the coast so I had plenty of opportunities to try. I eventually managed to knock them out without killing them by shooting a tranq arrow, waiting about 4 seconds, shooting again, etc. Killed about 10 in 12 capture attempts, but I finally have a male and female tamed in my base.

Pretty much my experience too.

use a scorpion, sting the bird once and wait until the blood on the kairaku disappears then sting it again. rinse and repeat. worked every time for me.
