Noob question: oil harvesting

I'm new to the game and playing on PS4 (in Single Player until I get better used to the game). I'm over on the far west side of the island, right where the snow biome starts. In the shallow water, there are these dark greyish, almost iridescent blobs. I've previously gotten silica from them. Are those oil blotches? If not, what are they? If so, how do I harvest them? I tried a metal pickaxe but I guess since it's so shallow that I can't really get below the water level, it won't let me harvest whatever it is.

You are most likely taling about clams right? If you have noting in your hands you can just press E to harvest them.

If you want oil they wont help you tho.. Just continue along the shore. Into the snow biome. You will find big black rocks standing on the shore line. You can harvest them with a pickaxe to get oil.

Those sound like the pearl resources. Oil are the great big black rocks up on top of the ice.

oil that is below the water is the same, except that you will see oil drifting up in the water from the oil rock.
