I used the steam controller itself exclusively for about 3 or 4 years. I enjoy it a lot. But now I tend to use mouse and keyboard for a lot of games.
It all depends on how I feel and then sometimes the game itself is just better played with one or the other. For instance, I would never play Dark Souls with a k/m. And also controllers, even the steam controller, are not suited for RTS type games and there are limits to how competitive you can be with an fps without a k/m.
The one thing I can say about controllers though is I feel it is the best way to play casually and sit back and relax.
I tend to buy games on a platform depending on which input I'll enjoy playing it with. Like Dave says pretty much only racing games and platformers on console. RTS/strategy for sure on PC, I've never had a good experience with them on console.. some people would demand games like Bethesda's Fallouts be played on PC and while they are almost shooters and aiming would be better with a mouse they take a lot longer to play than the average shooter and I always found using WASD for that many hours of gameplay, aswell as the interface being ported meant that playing them on console was superior interaction, mods be damned.
And of course the interface for using a controller on Ark specifically is awful, I don't think I played console version for more than a minute when I purchased it. How you gonna 'survive' if you have to press multiple buttons to quickly access any item on a hotbar, I don't know.
I found this as I was curious about mouse with Ark, n well, thanks to y'all, it may be time to dive in again. Skål!
The only exception is Dark Souls, and any Souls-like game. Those are games specifically for a controller.
I read the first sentence and thought, "AHA, WRONG!!!" then I read your 2nd paragraph.....correct
But yeah, all survival games are waaaaaaaay better with keyboard and mouse.
