Do hardcore gamers use mouse+keyboard, controller, or both?
I'm about a month into playing various FPS and MMORPGs via Steam and was curious what people playing PC-based games for a while end up preferring:
  1. Keyboard & Mouse
  2. Gaming Controller
  3. Combination of Keyboard/Mouse and Controller
Long, long ago, I played games using the standard WASD keys and a mouse, but recently we've settled on Xbox One and Steam controllers for game play. As a multi-decade mouse user, I'm much more accurate aligning crosshairs with the mouse, but feel it's more convenient to keep both hands on the controller almost exclusively, with the mouse reserved for choosing items from the inventory, or selecting menu items.

Which do you use, and why?

Thanks!

The best part about pc gaming for me is that you do indeed have to option to use either.
I used the steam controller itself exclusively for about 3 or 4 years. I enjoy it a lot. But now I tend to use mouse and keyboard for a lot of games.
It all depends on how I feel and then sometimes the game itself is just better played with one or the other. For instance, I would never play Dark Souls with a k/m. And also controllers, even the steam controller, are not suited for RTS type games and there are limits to how competitive you can be with an fps without a k/m.
The one thing I can say about controllers though is I feel it is the best way to play casually and sit back and relax.

Mouse and Keyboard, why? Its superior, easier bar access, better aiming, you can easily type in chat and talk to people too. I have tried ark with a controller and its pure garbage.

anything other than racing games or platform games is terrible with a controller..

I just don't know how you can do it, in some games you use nearly every key on the board for some action and it just won't fit on a controller. Plus it feels super weird sitting at my desk and trying to hold a controller in the same way attaching a keyboard to the xbox and balancing it on your knees while you're sitting on a sofa is super uncomfortable.

I tend to buy games on a platform depending on which input I'll enjoy playing it with. Like Dave says pretty much only racing games and platformers on console. RTS/strategy for sure on PC, I've never had a good experience with them on console.. some people would demand games like Bethesda's Fallouts be played on PC and while they are almost shooters and aiming would be better with a mouse they take a lot longer to play than the average shooter and I always found using WASD for that many hours of gameplay, aswell as the interface being ported meant that playing them on console was superior interaction, mods be damned.

And of course the interface for using a controller on Ark specifically is awful, I don't think I played console version for more than a minute when I purchased it. How you gonna 'survive' if you have to press multiple buttons to quickly access any item on a hotbar, I don't know.

A year late n likely a buck short, but I'm drunk and this is a subject I think about plenty. Long/short, I'm generally a controller guy (ease of use and I like the laid back in the couch style) but I've been playing a lot of m&kb again recently as my controller broke and it's hard to find a decent n reliable one here. Some games just ain't that fun without a controller (RDO is built for console) and others are terrible with a controller (I never could figure out how to use one with RTS games well). Yea, aiming is much smoother for fps with a mouse, but we each adapt to the pros n cons with one or the other with time. Also, different games have different things to them. With a mouse, I struggle with RDO, but slay in COD. Meanwhile, my muscle memory for an aim to headshot via controller in RDO is as fast, if not faster, than most people using dead eye on me 😅

I found this as I was curious about mouse with Ark, n well, thanks to y'all, it may be time to dive in again. Skål!

Every game with keyboard and mouse is better.

The only exception is Dark Souls, and any Souls-like game. Those are games specifically for a controller.

I would say there more than just Dark Souls that are made for controllers (the aforementioned Red Dead for example) but in general, I agree

Since posting this question, I ended up picking up a Razer Tartarus keypad and am now "all in" on keyboard+mouse. I still have an Xbox Elite controller that I fire up every so often, but my go to setup is keypad, keyboard, and mouse.

Not every game. Try FIFA with keyboard and mouse ;)

But yeah, all survival games are waaaaaaaay better with keyboard and mouse.
