Kill alpha

If you're really bad at the game, then you should just focus on playing the game. Even if you level fast, you'll just get frustrated from not understanding how the game works ... this game has an extremely high learning curve atm and leveling up fast will only make it worse.

Risky but worth it: killing alphas. Much safer but slower is batch producing huge amounts of narcotics. They are great to level up.

When I start on a new server I like to power level to get going. The process is a complete grind, but it works. Simply put, make foundations. Gather up some thatch and make thatch foundations, put them down and destroy them (hold E for more options, select Destroy) to get half the materials back. Make more with the refunded materials, repeat over and over. As you're making them crawl between bushes and trees to gather more mats as you go, over and over. Move up to wood when you can learn the engram for it. Putting some points in weight as you do this is key. Once I get to level 20+ I usually feel like I've got enough stats I can survive well enough that leveling takes less of a priority so I get to building a base and taming some dinos. If you can make a stone base, do so. You'll use stone structures throughout the rest of the game for some purpose or another and it's a lot safer of a base than wood.

Just building your base and getting everything you want set up will get you another 10 or so levels depending on what you do. It's less xp focused but essential to your progress. The mortar is your best friend. Make spark powder, make gun powder, make cementing paste. You're gonig to need all of this, even if you don't need it now you will later. Making narcotics is a great bet as it gives good xp and you'll need them to tame all the dinos you're going to want. No matter how many narcotics you make it's never too many, you WILL use them down the road and probably sooner rather than later. When you want to take a break from farming berries, flint, stone, etc. go tame something. Trikes are a good early dino as you can farm a lot of things much more effeciently with them, plus they can carry a fair amount. A pteranodon will open up the world to you (and get you killed if you don't mind that stamina bar).

Once you have a decent base going and some good dinos you've leveled a bit in your yard you can see about hunting alphas and making high tier items. Having appropriate dinos for this is key and always look before you leap (spyglass is your best friend). Engage fights you know you can win and have an exit strategy. Despite the necessary caution and calculation, killing alphas takes less of a learning curve and is probably a better method than crafting when it comes to leveling. **I'm going to disclaimer here and just put forth that Ark is largely a game of risk management. Take well thought out risks where the odds are heavily in your favor and maintain situational awareness.

Leveling quickly via high tier items is a harder proposition as you have to have an effecient system in place for farming the materials. I usually just let the levels come in as I build things I need and level my dinos. Late game when you have a Quetzal and gathering dinos and can move around the map easily transporting relatively large amounts of materials you can look at crafting high xp items to get some of the last levels but prior to that alphas are the way to go.

In general though I'd encourage you to stop and smell the roses a bit. Levels are important, it's really the only gain you can make that can't be taken from you. However, it's only a part of the game. Accrue resources and assets, limit your risks, plan well and execute carefully. Do this and before you know it you'll be grappling off of a quetzal solo taming gigas.

Good luck survivor. Remember: when death seems inevitable, press Z.

Crafting gives the most XP by far. This system needs to be tweaked actually, because as it stands, I could go kill 500 enemies....or craft 15 wood foundations.

If you're playing solo make sure gather rates and xp rates are set to at least x3. The game isn't designed for solo play so I recommend making it a little easier on yourself.

Swamps with a bow or pike level you up pretty quick. At hgih levels (im talkin 75+) you are gonna want to kill alphas. lots of them. better have a dino strong enough for it though

Almost any level of rex and good timing on hits will kill any alpha raptors/carnos.....but it takes a while

single player?

In single player I tend to make a very basic hut with bedroll, mortar, some storage.

And build up a nice stockpile of narcotics, stimulant, sparkpowder. Tame up a small army of dilos and a trike or two.

then work towards a decent base location (I tend to make a temp/work base on herbie island... on the outer shores so I can keep all the material spawns on the island and use a raft a lot early on and later if I don't bother getting a quetzal)

A good way to do it is to simply stockpile mats (hide, chitin, metal ingots, crystals, etc...) And craft stockpiles of things you'll need (arrows, spare armor, spare weapons, narcotics, stimulants, etc) I usually focus a lot on consumables.

Saddles are nice to make, decent xp too. But also stocking up on base components to make a final base will also be a big help (one reason I make the temp/work bases all over.)
