More Than 4 Player Local?
I bought this game for 5 of my friends, assuming we could play together on a local server, turns out the max players you can have is 4.

This was incredibly dissapointing, can it be fixed please? I don't play multiplayer games online due to hackers, ♥♥♥♥ and greifers, so it would be nice to be able to play with my friends.

Please note that we are NOT looking to join servers.

4players is the limit for local, hosted allows more.

I'm aware what the limit is for hosted, hence why I'm making a suggestion for them to change it.

I'm not interested in finding a "good" server, that's the whole point of this thread. I have 5 users who all want the same thing.

Since this game is still in the works, I am making a suggestion since I am not satisfied with the local features yet.

You can hire your own server and password protect it, meaning no one but you and your friends can actually get on.
Doesn't take away from your suggestion obviously, but might be a more short-term solution?

That is pretty much the only option for now which stinks becuase we aren't going to pay for a server. We're going to wait until ARK puts out an update so that local servers can hold more players.

You can just host your own for free
Lazeras Feb 28, 2016 @ 7:29pm
run your own dedicated server locally

When we attempted to do that, it wouldn't let us host AND use the same computer to play the game at the same time. Basically, we would have had to run a server on one of the computers and then got an extra computer for that person to play on as well.
The guy in your group of friends with the strongest computer (CPU, storage and RAM, not GPU) can host a dedicated instance as though running a server. Hopefully there is enough leftover for him to run the game client as well.

If not, find a sixth desktop. It doesn't really matter what as long as it's 64-bit and recent-ish. Install a dedicated server instance there.

EDIT: I just read your post above mine, install it on a virtual machine on said computer.

We tried hosting a dedicated server, his computer is basically top of the line (he built it himself for gaming purposes), and it couldn't run both at the same time. We don't have another desktop, usually he runs a server since he has the best computer and the rest of us use laptops.

That sucks. +1ing this thread.

You can build your server. It's not that hard.

How is he trying to run the server? I'm assuming the worst and imagining your friend trying to open two simultaneous client instances of a Steam game. If that is the case, you have taken the wrong approach. Run a non-graphical, headless ARK server instance either in a VM or natively.

If that sounds like too much work, start looking for a hardware solution. My recommendation: (YOUR OWN CITY HERE).craigslist.org/search/sya
