How to catch Pteranodon?

What location on the body are you hitting with the first shot and are you using a bow or crossbow? If a single shot isn't working, just follow it and land another. Or position yourself so you can get 2 shots off real fast. If you are using a bow, try using a crossbow, as it'll take less shots.

What lv are you looking to tame?

First of all it's easier with crossbows or guns.

Wait for them to land as they have already used that stamina. You may want to start off with a low lv one so you can catch higher levels more.

As you can chase them.

Shoot them in the head, and then if they aren't down try shooting them again, you might need to work up the aim some.

Method 1

Step 1: Build a 5x5x2 wood structure with window walls (no windows) and a ladder going up one side.

Step 2: Wait for a ptera to land inside.

Step 3: Place ceiling on structure trapping Ptera inside for easy taming.


Method 2

Have someone carry you with a argent and chase it through the skies.

Ride on a quetz platform and shoot at it in the air.


Method 3

Beg the server admin to force tame one for you.


Method 4

Practice with the bow/gun and improve your aim till you can hit one flying.

Start with a low level one. It will go down with one head shot. Then use that one to chase higher levels.

i'm a bit confused... you literally need 1 shot in the head to knock out 90% of all wild pteranodons. there are only a few that don't get knocked out and you need a second Tranquil Arrow (via Crossbow!). What exactly are you doing? It's one the easiest knock outs in the game

also, are you using a bow or crossbow to tranq it? you use less tranq arrows to knock em out as opposed to a normal bow. every time I use my crossbow to shoot a pteranodon, just takes one shot. hell, I even use my tranqs for hunting. :)

same here. they dont have quad damage any more and the people on these forums dont seem to get that.

it takes at least three shots to tranq a low level one and unless you are very lucky the torpor DECREASES while it's fleeing.

I tranqued two level 100s last night. Each took just one tranq dart to the head & they went down instantly.

I managed to get one down that was around level 12 with one trang arrow in the butt. You just need to follow it. Sometimes they drop in the forest and you don't notice, so you think they flew off.

Same principle applies regardless. Should be able to 1-shot a level 50 or so with a primitive xbow. I know when I starting out on a new server (post flyer dmg multiplier nerf) I was easily knocking out level 20-40s with the starter bow by waiting for them to land then headshotting them.

Actually, I have another new character I'll be playing tonight. Just unlocked tranq arrows. If you really find it that difficult I can record a vid showing it working.

To be fair to OP, primitive 100% damage Crossbow can only one shot knock out maybe up to level 40ish Pteranodons... so the solution would be to get a crossbow of high end or just start with low level Pteranodon for now and aim for high level ones when you have at least apprentice crossbow or tranq darts.

They do fly away when shot, but should fall down somewhere in the air, so just watch for that and follow them

I recommend a very low level one first... then go for an argie (at which point you really don't need the petra)
