Castoroides info thread
Spawning seems to be in the interior rivers just outside of the swamp areas.

This was done in single player with increased rates. It still harvested between 3x and 4x what I get with a metal axe.

It's torpor drops like a rock, around 2pts per second.
Prefers Mejoberries to the others.
Wiki says it likes Gallimimus kibble[ark.gamepedia.com], may or may not be accurate. http://ark.gamepedia.com/Giant_Beaver
Saddle is level 60.
It can breathe and attack underwater.
If you dismount it underwater it will return to the surface. Not good for deep sea exploration unless you're going into an underwater cave and don't want to use a frog.
It's saddle works like a smithy with no slot limit, only the creatures weight determines how much you can load onto it.
It can attack while sprinting, making it great for chasing down stuff.
It's attack has a oddly broad range it easily hits flying bugs, and it even hit a compy that was directly behind it.
It is gathering seeds better than my stego.
It's attack has a decent knockback effect, it also seems to be somewhat resistant to knockback effect (being hit by a wild saber only pushed it back about a foot). It managed to knockback a rex more than it a rex knocked it back.
Poops medium size feces.
Will allow you to craft and repair all standard smithy items from it's inventory (can't craft or repair fabricator items as expected).
Can only hold up to it's maximum weight stat. Cannot over-encumber.

Wood, Thatch, and Fiber weights all drop to 1/5 or 20% of their weight when transferred to the beaver's inventory. Stone's weight is reduced by 1/2 or 50% All other items weight remains the same (tested sparkpowder, oil, chitin, keratin, cementing paste, pearls, obsidian, metal ore, metal ingots, electronics, polymer (standard), gunpowder, angler gel, cloth armor, flak armor, riot armor, composite bow, crossbow, stone arrow, tranq arrow, metal arrow, narcotics, all berries and seeds).
Wood 50.00 -> 10.00
Thatch 02.00 -> 00.40
Fiber 02.00 -> 00.40
Stone 50.00 -> 25.00

Something to add to this thread. While collecting in forests and on beaches these guys get more wood than thatch. While collecting trees in water and swamps they get more thatch than wood.

It's an odd choice by the devs, but interesting and gives a new aspect where location could determine just how useful one can be.

Op might wanna add that it gathers thatch on SWAMP biome trees but gathers wood on FOREST biome trees, also a normal stack of wood weighs 50lbs, on the beaver it only weighs 10lbs so it can gather a lot more at low levels then most farming tames.

I'm in love with my beaver.

So anyone tried experimenting with the crops and it's % effectiveness? If you don't have Galli kibble is any crop the next best thing? After that Mejo berries?

Just spawned about 30 beavers at the waterfalls at 57 / 69 in SP, went out of rendering distance for about 3 min and sure enough the wild critters had made a dam.. Think dams on official servers are rare because the beaver itself doesn't seem to spawn in that much?
Chocobro 25/fev./2016 às 7:29
I've been going back to all the spots that I have been finding them, as well as along all the rivers and lakes and I still haven't been lucky enough to see a dam yet. I'm sure going to keep trying though. Maybe there needs to be a larger number of them in one spot for a dam to appear? Don't know but the largest congregation of them I've seen was at hidden lake and there were only three.

Really another tame wiith a high torpor drop , and isn't even as good at gathering wood as a mammoth? No thanks.

I will save my narcotics for something worth the resource sink.

The torpor drop is above average, but nowhere near as bad as dimetrodon or gallimimus. The gathering is at least as good as a mammoth - location matters for getting wood vs thatch - the real advantage is in the weight reduction for items gathered, you can bring a lot more back to base on a full inventory than you can with a mammoth.

ALSO, if you kill them, they provide a source of PELT outside of the snow biome, something that comes in handy as it can be a pain to farm for pelt to make your fur armor when you are freezing to death - now you can farm up your pelt in a warmer place and then have your fur armor made before you venture into the figid areas.

The weight reduction is probably the biggest boon. I bumped the weight on mine to 800 and I can bring back probably 3k worth of wood in one trip while still riding it home, no way I could do that on a mammoth.

I've got two tamed now, one for a mule and the other for a battle pet. The battler is honestly just as strong as my rex or spino and a heck of a lot more manuverable. It's ability to fight in water and on land and be very fast moving in/on both makes it probably the most versatile and worthwhile creature I have. I keep about 50 ingots and 200 hide on it at all times just in case I need to repair my flak or tools while I'm out and about.

Their Dams contain a lot of wood and cementing paste. I also saw some wild flowers. not sure if anything else goes in them as it's only a 1 slot dam atm

You have absolutely horrible reading comprehension. If you're in a forest biome, it gathers wood like crazy. So good in fact that my lvl 115 beaver absolutely destroys the wood harvesting ability of my lvl 210 mammoth. I dont use my mammoth anymore.
I found some in the Oasis/Hidden Lake too btw.
Lucky shot 25/fev./2016 às 23:25
the dams have paste,wood,silca pearls,rare flowers and rare mushrooms in them
kampfer91 26/fev./2016 às 2:52
Any idea where theirs dam is ? Do the wild beaver build it or the dam just randomly spawn whenever there is a beaver around ?

From the reports I'm seeing the dams spawn in the same areas that beavers do, and don't necessarily need to have a beaver around for it.

the dams spawn in water if there is beavers near it

Gathers wood better than the mammoth, carries more, fights better, runs faster, aquatic mount no o2.

Might want to reconsider.
