If not on laptop try to press the print screen key...
OK this posting is 4 years old and I believe what happen is some times if ARK crashed or freezes some of the steam setting can get messed up. So I will give you the information I have learned and hope one of these solutions help you.
One you mentioned key bindings, if you launch ARK and get to the 1st splash screen on the left you click the Options button prior to playing. Once your in the options click the 3rd icon at the top of the options screen labeled Key Bindings, see my screen shot below. Be aware the in game screen shot key bindings are not controlled through the ARK game settings for key bindings, it is done through the steam settings, read next section below. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2131913194
The screen shot option settings are located in the steam browser when you first launch steam. In the steam browser you see 5 small links at the top called Steam, View, Friends, Games and Help. Left Click the Steam link and select Settings and a new small window will open. From there on the left click the text labeled In-Game and on the right of that new window you will see a little box with text above it labeled Screenshot shortcut keys. Move your mouse over the text field of the box and left click in the box and then hit your F12 Key to bind your screenshot in ARK to the F12 key. Now hit OK button at the bottom of the window and restart steam and your screen shot should work in game now.
Appreciate the answer on an old thread, but obviously the issue is still happening.
OK then it has to be the files, do this...
Go to your library left click on Ark to select and then right click and hold and a menu will pop up select properties. Then from the new window click the top tab LOCAL FILES. Click the Button that says Verify Integrity Of Game Files. You probably have some missing or corrupted files. This can happen when games freezes, crashes. Ark is pretty big so it will take some time to verify and when it finds some bad files it will just re-download them at the end of the process.
Good luck I am thinking this is the issue and if this works remember in the future with any steam game if you start having issues Verify Integrity Of Game Files first thing.
