So are the greenhouse engrams worth the point sink? Can I get by with just the ceilings?
I built a 3x5 greenhouse (on XB1) but didn't see the 300% bonus appear until I put the glass ceiling on.
Not to mention, kibble and special foods tend to require the special crops that are ONLY achieved through growing. So, to gain access to the foods (some of which are extremely useful, especially when you can easily craft en mass) you do have to grow at least those.
I would consider it more of an end-game goal to get a huge greenhouse setup. Mid game I would only say its critical to grow the 4 special crops for kibble/food, if you care to use them.
I have some old screenshots in my profile of our old farm; nothing too special, just shows that we had about 4 large plots + 25ish small plots. this was before greenhouse effects, and fertilizer was a tad more tedious to make, too.
If engrams are the main concern, then plan ahead. Stock up resources for two mindwipe soups, and do some math on what you'll need for your size greenhouse. Respec, create/place greenhouse; respec back. Might be overkill, but where there is a Will, there is a Way.
According to the Wiki:
- A greenhouse does not need to be considered enclosed: A ceiling atop pillars or snapped to an adjacent wall is sufficient.

They have a bunch of screenshots there that give you examples of the bonus's too. I have not tried to make different walls and just put the glass ceilings, but it is assumed that they will work based on this information. Good luck!
The hard part of the greenhouse is getting it set up initially and then getting enough fertilizer. With beatles though and dinos which give large poo you'll be golden. You can offset beatles with compost bins. Especially since the phase through walls hasn't been addressed yet. Though I've heard you can surround them with spikes and they tend to stay put. I've also heard someone put their compost bins against the walls and that prevents them from wandering away as well.
I personally use the ARK Automated Mod so haven't seen the need to get any beatles yet.
