The EULA needs to be prominently displayed, and this may be required by law, depending on jurisdiction.
I was playing DayZ SA at the time of the ban.. All my ARMA games etc were also banned at teh same time though i had never even really played them at that point.. Was kinda pissed at it TBH.
BattlEye can upload ANY file from your computer that it has access to and send your files to their main server, this means (with the root access BE requires) you are giving a 3rd party company access to everything on your computer.
refrence: https://www.reddit.com/r/arma/comments/2750n0/battleye_is_sending_files_from_your_hard_drive_to/)
It's one thing to send a report with the process information of someone hacking and WC has said that is all BE doing, it's quite another to be uploading programs and files off the end users computer and storing it. The BattlEye software DOES have the capability to do that.
Even if (and I'm sure it is the case) BE isn't some shady company, they have been hacked before and they could be hacked again either by an employee or an outside hacker group. This means at the end of the day you are opening a security hole in your computer that could be exploited by hackers to access any file on your computer. Including passwords, bank logins etc..
I am 100% for hack detection and bans. However I am 100% against sugar coating the risks involved and think people should be aware of what WC is having them install on their computer and the potential cataclysmic amount of damage and loss of information installing that software could cause.
i LOL'd so hard.. so very very very hard..
Would you knowingly give one person you've never met the login to your computer? How about the keys to your car?
Kernel-mode is doing just that. The ability to access anything that your computer touches. Shares, Memory, Hard drives, USB drives, Anything. Kernel mode is god-mode when it comes to programs.
With the "company" that provides BattlEye being so relatively new, I am not so quick to hand complete and unrestricted access to my computer, every networked computer, and every SVN I have access to.
I can understand scanning the virtual private address space, but kernel mode? Not necessary.
And quite frankly, I have zero trust in such a new Sole Proprietorship having kernel-mode access to what essentially is my livelihood.. There are plenty of people I know in real life that I wouldn't give my password to. Why should I have to give it to a complete stranger?
Have to agree with they keylogging comment not really being any worry. While not a Mac/Linux user myself it is concerning to just leave them hanging on officials. This game is a lot of grinding and a lot of work to just have it gone overnight and through no glitch in the game but a decision made by the powers that be that don't effect everyone.
On the cat and mouse, the mouse will eventually get tired of being chased around and go for easier food. That means back to Arma and the upcoming Division game which also stores the same data The Right Hand mentioned client side. It plagued the beta of the game.
This also helps the developers concentrate on developing their game more and dealing with cheaters less. I used to have to help track them on another title, it's a complete chore and a time sink to do so. Hopefully this helps development progress further. Summer and release target aren't really that far away.
