ASE ended official support on September 30th of this year. However it is currently a more robust game both in terms of content and mods than that of ASA. Modders updating their mods depends on the modder and with no more updates being done officially, there's little need for modders to currently update their mods unless they're adding/fixing something on their end that wasnt previously.
As for servers, there are over 50,000+ unofficial servers out there. Dont use the in game system to find servers though as it cant comprehensively list them all. Instead most use the battlemetrics server instead as it is the only place that lists them all and also has a pretty a good search system in place too.
All in all, it just depends on your wants.
Since they hardly fixed any bugs before ASA, ASA is completely broken and they want to force you to pay them more money for ASA. I doubt we will see much support for ASE outside what mod creators can provide.
