Look at Rust it has 110,000 players and you feel it since every server is full and there are ton of 600/600 players not to mention official servers.
Okay bud.
you can thank the toxic community for years all the things they did now people spread
Fake hype. It attracts new players because they see that the game is thriving and they want to buy it too.
Considering the official servers aren't around anymore, and people have to pay for ASE servers now, there is *every way* that *at least* 90,000 players are playing on private servers or single player. As someone who exclusively played on private servers and single player (basically only SP these days) for the vast majority of ASEs development lifetime, I personally know of at least 20 others that play like I do. And I'm just one random, obscure dude. Now calculate that across the ARK player base.
I would hazard a guess they've now adapted to cater to clientele playing exclusively on private servers that allow uploads/downloads and/or single-player. I mean...I'd just do it myself, because I can tweak my own game settings...but some people have more money than time or sense.
