This has been asked and answered now almost daily on here and elsewhere.
1. Ascended is a completely separate game. Everyone must purchase it regardless of whether you own ASE or not. No files will be transferable either from ASE.
2. Originally (when it was to be declared a free game in January) co-founder of Ark was calling it a remaster. Then in April it was changed to being called a remake and from April to the beginning of the summer, pricing has changed 3 times for it to currently being 45(or some launch discount claimed then at the start of the summer of 40.)
3. It hasnt "replaced" ark. However due to a host of reasons, all the 1800ish official servers of Ark shut down on September 30th. However players are still playing on the 70,000+ unofficial servers out there.
4. The price for Ascended is meant (as of the last 3 price changes) meant to include all 12 dlcs and with the claim that there's to also later be a 13th at some point. However when ascended launches this month, only the Island map will be available at launch with other 12 dlc's being staggered over the course of the next 1.5 to 2 years. Also cross play will not immediately be available either and released later as well.
Additionally, mods will be 100% exclusive to the 3rd party website overwolf. Some mods will also be placed in the "premium mods" proram which players will have to pay extra for to use with ASA(some having been freely plays ASE ones).
And lastly Nitrado was given 100% exclusivity rights to Ascended server hosting services be it official or unofficial. No other hosting services will have said rights. Only exception then for players is to run a server from your own computer instead.
5. Game will have other changes as well to play that have been previously different with ASE. Refer then to this and more via the tiny little FAQ from the Sept 30th community new letter(community crunch). https://steamcommunity.com/games/346110/announcements/detail/3707081777773332603?snr=2_9_100015_
6. No store page at the time of writing this is available to view or purchase the game from yet. Seemingly there is a page already constructed but not available to the public here on steam yet.
That's essentially all known at this time. Some are leaping faithfully into getting the game, while others are planning to wait and see how the chips fall/dust settles due to the last 6 months(and longer of controversies and news concerning Snail-Wildcard' fiscal accountability challenges.
Thanks for all the info!
Yes, you should be skeptical, after all you apparently read about here on steam on the internet, where you should question everything you read
Currently it is only the ASE official servers that closed down. Other than those, you can keep playing ASE as long as it is still available, so no one is forcing anyone to buy ASA and you can still play all the DLCs in ASE. I expect this situation to last at least another year.
You have to consider the business model used for ARK too. They sell the main game, give away some DLCs, charge for a few, but essentially you pay once and play how long? No one said forever, but we all had to know it would end at some point. Just happens that point is now for some. Other companies charge a monthly subscription. Some are the free (pay to win) model. Personally, I prefer how ARK is sold.
Thankfully for all the ARK addicts, you can get ASA to feed your addiction and you don't have to go cold turkey just yet
Here's the SEC filing(again as its been posted multiple times for months now) by Snail regarding the Marbis(Nitrado) agreement:
https://investor.snail.com/node/7086/html
1. (In clause 6.1 pages 11-12): Snail gives 100% exclusivity rights to service hosting services for both official and player run servers. Thus you will only be able to rent server stacks or server slices exclusively from Nitrado if you want to have an unofficial server for Ark Ascended. However this isexcluding privately owned machines by players being used in a non commercial sense. It was effective upon the signing of the agreement between Snail and Marbis.
2. (In clause 6.2 pages 12-13): In the event that Snail does not launch Ark Ascended by the 31st of October, a penalty clause is triggered that allows Marbis to take all exclusivity rights for server hosting for ASE from November 1st (Ark Survival Evolved). (and again too with the exception of non commercial privately run servers from players on rigs).
Keep in mind I wholly believe they're release Ascended this month so said penalty clause wont happen, but the 100% ASA exclusivity remains, just like Overwolf also having been given 100% exclusivity for mods for ASA.
Well at least it will give people like you more to complain about
Although, there is no way it isn't going to be a mess. Only but the most optimistic fool doesn't think this will be very similar to ARK when it was in Early Access around 8 years ago. Some may not have been around then, but I recall trying to fly from one side of the map (The Island) to the other and you were very lucky if your game didn't crash and you ended up dead and maybe your flyer too
Personally i feel they will not release by the date, and will default deliberately thus causing many unofficial servers to either close or have move to nitro, i feel this is a deal that was made for the loan to get ASA out a door giving nitro all slices of the pie and making the choice to buy ASA more attractive than starting over on nitro with the old Ark, they would make far more money on new sales than lose on defaulting. Snail are well known for their shadiness and lack of any moral decency.
