What you want is a Shotgun or Compound Bow. The Compound Bow's metal arrows ignore Armour Value which makes it extremely lethal against tougher enemies - like Gigas and Rex. The Shotgun meanwhile does immense damage on headshots, and it's probably the most situationally appropriate weapon aswell.
If you're on Primitive, well then you're just SOL for the moment.
Weapons don't do a fixed damage per shot. Instead they have a Base Damage, and depending on what they hit that's modified up or down.
GUNS.
Guns get a bonus against Humans and Flyers. Against everything else they're debuffed for basic vetinary and ballistics reasons. Two key exceptions apply: the Longneck Rifle and Shotgun are so powerful that the debuff doesn't really matter - they're still practical choices for hunting. The other guns leave a lot to be desired.
BOWS
Bows are hunting weapons first and foremost, since they're primarily effective against animals. All animals have a degree of Armour Rating, which Metal Arrows ignore - this makes them extremely deadly against larger animals and those with shells. A good Compound Bow is arguably better than an Assault Rifle for hunting. For a whole string of reasons.
EXPLOSIVES
Are for demolition and not much else. Heavily bonused against Structures and heavily debuffed against everything else. They can kill, and the splash damage is useful - but they're not ideal for use in combat.
Final note: High velocity rifle rounds aren't effective against large animals. You don't hunt big game like Rhinos or Elephants with an M4 Carbine: you use a shotgun or a high-powered hunting rifle. That's why the Pistols and Assault Rifle are debuffed against beasts.
Agreed. Compound Bows take a little getting used to, but they're very accurate to a long range and have a respectable rate of fire. They're my preffered hunting weapon - I'm like Jennifer Lawrence only better looking.
Jokes aside, Metal Arrows are extremely durable. I recommend only bringing 50 - my hunting trips last about an hour, and I usually return with the full 20 I left with. They've got atleast a 70% chance to survive.
It is if you play on official, you'd need a full team of people to fight through the caves if you don't have good mastercraft or above weapons and armor. If you have the gear, you can go through safely by yourself if you're careful or with a couple tribe mates, Ascendant compound bow seems just adequate to take those yetis out quickly.
So what? I've killed Rexes that had a lot more health than that. Killed them while on foot -everybody has.
You've only lost when you stop trying. So an attitude of "lol game is impossible GG devs" is both self-defeating and probably holding you back more than the Yetis are.
