If you actually bothered to read the actual, official news posts by Wildcard on all of this, you'd have the answers to your concerns.
All in all, official servers are being shut down in August for Ark 1. A remastery of ark called Ascended is being released(with a 60 buck price tag) and official servers will be implemented instead for it.
Ascended will have all mods on the Overwolf system and that Wildcard will allow mod makers to join the premium mods program and charge for mods selected to join it and per a price the mod maker decides.
Ark 1's mods remain as they are though some mod makers have stated they intend to either remove or abandon their mods on Ark 1 and instead focus on Ascended with the goal of getting on the premium mods program. Others are stating they will not abandon their mods on Ark 1 nor charge for their mods if they make new ones on Ascended.
So your son playing on his own dedicated or non dedicated server on Ark 1 is not in jeopardy. Whether mods he uses will be abandoned/removed by the mod maker though are solely at the discretion of the mod maker but that's it.
Thank you! My goodness I swear no one reads the game news. They all just copy and paste what their favorite youtuber says...
None of my fav tubers play Ark. I did go to the store page and looked at related news and the only thing I saw was a long list of community crunch news. I also googled it but most of it was more rage than actual info.
But thank you both, my goodness some people just want to get on the forums and complain about other people's posts rather than answer posts they can actually help with.
A simple google search on my end shows page after page of articles explaining it's just the official servers being shut down.

After the 600th post because users can't seem to google, search forums, or read news, you're going to get the response you did. Even still you received an answer despite the sarcasm. In fact I'd argue retsam gave you a great reply.
rip ark. i vote with my wallet
Asks for help; help is given albeit with a face like a bulldog chewing on a wasp.
He attempted to dig through walls of pictures and nonsensical news (take the last post from Wildcard for example; a tree) and understandably decided to ask the community instead. A little more grace would be welcome in these forums, I think.
Your inane churlishness aside and while I understand you're being silly in framing things that he was incapable of using google or just looking on the official website's community crunch news posts, or here, or the links of such on the official twitter etc more or less, it was to indirectly say to not use youtube influencers as one's source of information more since some of them tend to be rather inaccurate at times. :P
All in all though, again, you're being rather silly.
Yes. All legacy servers are included because they're officially maintained by WC. Again read the news on all this on the official website.
And I hope you all don't chew me a new one just for saying all of this. lol
