So they went from $90 to $60.
1. The announcements have many different variables of contention. Due to this, there are supporters and dissenters of one, some or all points. Its not so simplistically rendered with saying as you do in your title. Evidence though is compelling that there is a larger data set of people who have posted here and on the official forums and else where are more in dissension (again in varying degrees) with the details of the announcements than those that are in support of it.
Also important to point out that the entirety of the player base are not evidenced to be participating in these discussions either and specific data then on the majority of the player base's point of views are not readily(nor really ever will be) available. though one could extrapolate compellingly that it would match what I previously said in this point.
2. Your math regarding the price points is a off (a mess really) on some parts and assumptive in others.
March 31st announcement's price points:
-Ascended base game (bundled with Ark 2)= $50 this includes the 7 non story canon dlc's. 2 story canon DLC's bundles (that's a total of 5 maps) (staggered in release) to be $20 each. Total for everything = 90. However playstation folks would not receive Ark 2 bundled and pay a $40 price for Ascended only and then the subsequent 2 dlcs at $20 each for a total of 80.
April 7th announcement's price points:
- Ascended would not be a price of $60 including -all- dlcs (still staggered in release). This price point is for all platforms now.
Here is the direct quote from the April 7th Announcement regarding this:
So please again note it clearly states -all the listed are -included- in the package.
Thus your claim of it not being the case is false.
- Ark 2 is not being bundled(ie not obscuring its price point) and its price will be announced at a later date.
So any pricing you affix to Ark 2 is speculation though it could be correct it could be lower and could be higher.
3. Your point regarding Ascended originally being stated to be free by Jeremy Steiglitz in January and now not being so is at least accurate.
4. Claiming the pricing is a scam is an inaccurate label really. If it is released and then claims they were/are advertising concerning features and more were not accurate or not forth coming, or that the product wasnt actually delivered at all, then you can have a compelling argument for false advertising and perhaps a scam having been perpetrated. However, that remains to be seen.
If all players of Ark 1 lost access to the game and told they had to purchase Ascended(this is not what is meant either by the eviction of the minority of official server players either in this regard) in order to continue to have a playable product, this could be alleged to be fraudulent as well. However that isn't the case either at this juncture.
What can be primarily then stated is that the whole contentious nature of these announcements and the 180 from stating it'd be free to now costing, is more likely to be considered an exercise of bad faith on the part of Wildcard.... at this point. How they conduct themselves in the coming months and after release will better determine the extent of that bad faith and whether it transitions into something more.
5. Keep in mind, we may receive more announcements as time goes on which may make things worse or better in the minds of the community as well. My suggestion would be to prepare for the worst and be surprised happily if things turn out better otherwise.
6. I've said this before and I'll mention it again now. There is a GDC talk from 2017 with the heads of Ark talking about their views on the player base, especially in regards to when they have complaints, review bombs and more. Short answer is that they take it with a grain of salt because the data they've collected shows that while people will condemn decisions they've made, especially regarding price points, players still purchase the product despite that dissensions.
You can watch their talk here. Its an hour long though but it really does have some interesting insights to their thinking and metrics they employ(though a dev recently said that their metrics they use for things have changed to be more IP encompassing vs that of one specific part of the IP like ark mind you):
https://www.gdcvault.com/play/1024229/-ARK-Survival-Evolved-Lessons
If I put what their talk partially covers in another way, they recognize that gamers are some of the least principled consumers in any market; and as long as a product is found to be entertaining and of merit to play, players' protesting and condemnations before that are just fickle ire.
Because they are dumb, plain and simple. They praise anti-consumer practices just because they love the game, ignoring completely the fact that they themselves are consumers.
Yes, separating ASA and Ark2 is in theory a good idea (and it's what was asked), except they are now charging a lot more for what was supposed to be a free update and a new game.
What players asked for was for the Ark 2 bundle to be divided in 2 parts. Both the games and the prices... What happened was that they separated the games and are now charging full price for both... (Let's be real here if anyone believes Ark 2 will cost less than $60 they are delusional)
And I'm not even talking about the morons that are blaming the community for the new prices, as if it wasn't Wildcard/Snail Games that set them...
