Right click over your ini file, then properties, then make it read only.
First you edit your ini file the way you want/need, and just then do that. Make a copy of the file after finished edited it to anywhere in your machine, that way you always will have a backup already edited.
I would presume this would be something that wouldn't have to be said but it can slip the mind sometimes.
Ark has a feature where it will delete the config if those settings are outside the normal range, ie, likely to cause the game to crash. It can be annoying when your config file keeps getting reset, but it's a good thing overall.
Find out what settings are wrong. It's best to change or add settings one at a time, then restart the game. If the config file is reset, it had to be the last one you just added. Then tweak it and try again. If you make 50 changes to the config file at once... well, good luck trying to figure out which of the 50 it is. Stock up on tea leaves and crystal balls. Stay away from quija boards, don't ask the spirits for help fixing your config. Bad idea.
If the game launches, and the setting is good, then stop the game, and make a copy of the config file and store it. So you can replace the config easily if it gets wiped later on. On my game, I've changed multiple settings in multiple configs... so I save the whole config folder at one time.
Copying syntacs config isn't a good idea, he plays withs a lot of mods. If you don't have the exact same setup, it's a bad idea. plus I'm willing to bet you don't know why his settings are set that way.
Setting the config to read only. Yeah... no. not a good idea. It's deleting the config so it's less likely to crash. Preventing it from deleting isn't going to stops crashes or corruption.
You don't have to add back any default configs. Just delete it, and start the game without the config. Ark will see it's missing and replace it. It's sort of self healing. The game has 2 sets of completely clean unaltered config files in other locations, for the sole purpose of replaces missing or messed up configs. Don't ever mess with those or ever change them. The game can get stuck in a loop, where it replaces a messed up config with a "clean" one... except it's not clean, it's messed up too. It will see the messed up config, and start the whole process all over again, over and over and over.
