[SOLVED] Ark lagging hard whenever I move
Let me start this out with the fact I've been playing this game since 2015, so yes I know ark is a POS performance wise obviously. I have a decent PC (used to have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Lenovo) and a GTX 1080 graphics card, but I am having serious issues.

I decided to come back to ark after a few months of taking a break, during that tie I got a new pc since my old one was (literally) falling apart, turning off and not turning on for hours or days, it was time for it to retire to just be used for light gaming and internet browsing.

I have set up everything in my pc correctly, everything seems functional and no cords are loose. Other games have been running smoothly (I mean not 100% with atlas because... you know, wildcard...). I was excited to see what this pc could do paired with my graphics card since even though my last pc was ♥♥♥♥♥♥, it could run ark on almost max setting with 60fps with a bit of lag on bigger loading areas, I was hoping this would help with that.

I installed ark, decided to play SP first, it took over an hour to load, reasonable as it's SP. Then I found that it was very very laggy, but only when I moved, otherwise it would show me having 40-50fps. Since I have a lot of mods downloaded, I assumed it was that and then decided to play on a lightly modded server.

I got in the server and it was 100x worse. I was on 10 fps and when I moved it would lag for 1 whole minute. not moving, 40-60 fps. Turning down settings to low does nothing, moving at all still lags the♥♥♥♥♥♥out of my pc. I don't know what to do. I validated the files, reinstalled ark, made sure my graphics card drivers were up to date, made sure everything was up to date and still it does the same thing. I tried playing overwatch to see if it was a connection issue or maybe something was off, but my game ran as smooth as always with no issues. I know overwatch isn't as demanding, but even on my old pc I couldn't play without lag, this one there is none. When I played atlas I could play on max settings with 40 fps as well.

I just can't figure out what to do. I'm not extremely tech savy, but I know basic stuff so sorry if I sound really dumb when answering anything. I just can't seem to figure out an issue on my pc's end, internet is fine too, there is just nothing I can find that can be causing this due to hardware issues, so I'm pretty sure this is on Ark's end. I'd appreciate any advice.

Forgot to add info on my computer/gpu (again I'm a ♥♥♥♥ing idiot with pc knowledge, let me know if you need more info than this)

Geforce GTX 1080

CyberPowerPC

AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor
3.5GHz

8 GB ram
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: Reinstalling mods then rag fixed my problem! Back to 60 fps with max settings. Told you guys it wasn't a hardware issue, thanks to the person who reccomended I redownload mods though.

I reinstalled rag after having the dry grass crash (a known cause of crashes and errors) when trying to load in after reinstalling mods. But after reinstalling everything, I am back to playing on max with high fps :D

Just a quick note, don't resort to touching your hardware first, always try even the dumb things like restarting your pc before even thinking about that. I have been playing ark since 2015 like I've been saying. EVERY issue I've had was an ark problem, NOT a hardware problem.

Please, if someone is trying to say something don't shoot them down immediately because you think you know better. I know my computers and I know this game, I may not be a ♥♥♥♥ing genius but I know enough to know this was NOT a hardware issue from the start seeing as the simple facts showed that my gpu was fine and this pc should be able to handle this gpu seeing as other people have no issues and Ark is the ONLY game I am having issues with. If you would rather play wise♥♥♥♥♥and be passive aggressive then just move on, it's not helpful. Honestly I was more anxious about these comments then the game.

It is best to go to steam's help menu then click "system information" and copy paste all that information here. This is because its what --steam-- detects for your game play and there can be discrepancies from what you think is going on for the rig and what steam says is being used for games. It also gives other information that can be variables for your issue potentially.

From clicking to play single player to actually being in the single player world should not take an hour to process. One scenario only that I can think of for that would be if you are playing are on an HDD and you had tons and tons of mods etc. 20ish mods though can take HDD users between 7 to 15 minutes to load depending so an hour I could only imagine to be way more mods but its very well possible something else is going on.

Keep in mind too that when in SP 100% of the resources used to play come from your comp vs that of shared with a server in a server situation.

In regards to lag and issues with a server, variables for your issue can be things such as the location of the server, whether the server is being run from some guys inferior comp(ie comp not meant to run ark well let alone be a server), the definition of "light mods", using mods that are broken, and much much more.

Mentioning you played atlas and had no issues has less relevancy too because we do not know what server(s), mods(not so many atm on atlas by comparison btw)and you cant play atlas in single player as you do ark.

So for now, post the steam detected info and if you wish, the full list of mods you are using in single play and or on that server you attempted and we can go from there.

Also SP and the amount of mods/which mods is irrelavent. I've played servers more heavily modded than my SP game with my old pc with none of these issues. The fact of the matter is that no matter where I play the issues are the same and no one else has them, meaning it isn't a mod issue and something is wrong on my end.

None of the mods I downloaded are broken, I always check comments to make sure they are still running properly. I know that just because it's fine with other people, it doesn't necessarily mean it's running right on my pc, but the mods on my SP game and on the server are drastically different while my lag is the same.

The server I am on has quite a few people, none of them are having issues, and it is not because of the location the server is being hosted on so I just don't understand what the issue is here, seeing as it recognizes my gpu. My gpu alone even with the pc I had before didn't have these issues and it isn't happening in any other games. I can't even play on ow with this lag, I used to play on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ laptop and on low the game was functional, so I just can't see this being a hardware issue seeing as other games are fine. I'm sorry if I sound upset in this, I'm just super frustrated with the whole situation, I appreciate your help.

You really need to get rid of that fx series chip. Update to ryzen when you can. The 1500x is performing better than the 8350 with lower cores and slower clock speed. Also if your playing on Ragnarok some places have really bad lag as well. I'm suspecting that your fx series chip is bottle necking your 1080. Also I'd say you need more memory than 8 gb.

It is also possible that even if all the mods you are using are up to date, one may be clashing with another. I'd remove them all just as a test.If it plays better, start adding them back in a couple at a time to see if one is causing the problem. Oh, and an hour to start a single player game? that is not reasonable at all, not even close. You definitely need to upgrade RAM and CPU if that is the case. that is horrible load times and most likely the root problem.

At least upgrade to 16GB of ram if not more
Cryptillian Feb 18, 2019 @ 1:58pm
I'm gonna try reinstalling mods now, I honestly should have done it before, but I have just been assuming the issue was bigger.

My previous pc had 6 GB of integrated ram, this one has 8 Gb of integrated RAM but my my gpu has 8 GB. Meaning in total my entire rig has 16 GB, the gpu itself with it's dedicated ram is enough to make a huge boost on any pc that can handle it. Again, I could play with max settings with 60fps on my old pc, I shouldn't need anymore upgrades for ark to run decently with at least high settings.

This pc is a dramatic upgrade from my last one and it's brand new. My old pc was a lenovo custom made for the specific store I bought it at, was made with outdated parts, and the tower's width was the length of my gpu. I didn't know what I was doing when I bought it, but I know enough now to know this pc should able to handle the gpu, especially if other people had no issues and other games, even atlas ran fine.

You dont have something simple going on like having not disabled your intergrated graphics right?
While the cpu doesnt have integrated, the mobo does from what I can see, so if you havent disabled that or set ark to use the 1080 through settings in windows its possible its defaulting to that, no?

Thats not how memory allocation and resourcing works.

Listen to and follow Retsams advice, he/she know what they are talking about.

I've never had to set anything up so that ark would use my graphics card in the past, could you explain how I would go about ensuring that ark is using my gpu in windows settings?

Also it seems I have an issue with the copy of rag I downloaded that might be causing my issues so I am going to reinstall rag and see if anything changes.

No, its very relevant.
You also need to stop using your old PC as a basis for comparison as its not helpful for you.
Samadhi Feb 18, 2019 @ 2:44pm
Try to run without any mods loaded.

If your issues resolve, its mod related.
Sorry for the simple suggestion but you need to simplify and eliminate moving parts to find the issue.

I dont know if its accurate, but from a post on reddit I found about low fps in ark had this to say;

"So I just fixed this problem for myself.

Turns out it was not using the graphics cards, but instead using the built in intel graphics.

I fixed by right clicking on my desktop. selecting NVIDEA Control Panel. 3d settings > Program Settings > Select Ark> (studiowildcardsomething.exe) > 2. SELECT THE PREFERRED GRAPHICS PROCESSOR FOR THIS PROGRAM > Select your Graphics card.

Hope this helps"

You might have to add ark to the list if it doesnt show intially in the dropdown (probably be listed as shootergame with the ark logo in the "add" menu)
From what i can see there seems to be two settings there that allow you to select a gpu, "CUDA - GPUs" and "OpenGL rendering GPU" you can look for others as I may not see them.

You can try setting them to use the 1080 and see if that helps at all, I cant say for certain though.

The post was about the win10 store version I believe but may be relevant.

The alternative is having a look in bios and seeing what the settings related to the intergrated are, but that shouldnt be necessary, and if you arent familiar with it I dont recommend it

But for completeness - again if you arent familiar with it I recommend against doing this on your own, and certainly dont play with anything else you dont know.

On boot at the black post screen (text screen that mentions all your hardware) or the mobo manufacturer splash screen press Del, atleast thats what it should be, it might be something else though.

You should end up at a blue screen menu that looks like something dos or win 95
The top most option should be MB intelligent tweaker, if you go into that and into IGX configuration you should see internal graphics mode, you can disable that and then press the button to save and then exit.

There shouldnt be any issue doing this but if there is and you cant get back to bios screen then youll need to clear the cmos, from memory to do that you can remove all power from the system, unplugging it completely, then on the motherboard there should be a little button battery that you want to remove, leave it out for a few minutes then put it all back and boot up, it should have cleared cmos and restored the default settings to bios.

He is better doing this through Device Manager first, then adjusting the bios if necessary imo.

Press Windows key + X
Select "device manager"
Double Click on "Display Adapters"
Right Click on the Item and click "disable"

what was the answer?
Cryptillian Feb 18, 2019 @ 9:26pm
It asn't a hardware issue like I have been trying to tell everyone this entire time. I just needed to reinstall all mods and rag and that's it. Everything is just like on my old pc, like I said it should be.

I really find it frustrating that so many people shot me down and ignored me when turns out I was right the entire time. Nothing wrong with my gpu or pc, other games ran fine because nothing is wrong with my hardware, my other pc run ark well with my gpu just as this one is now that it's been fixed. My load times are also back to normal, again not my pc, it was the game. I consulted a friend about this who knows a lot more than I do about computers, but they aren't familiar with Ark besides knowing it's kinda pile of ♥♥♥♥, there is nothing wrong with my specs, they said my ram is fine. Idk who tf buys/builds a pc with 16GB of integrated ram when it barely matters, what matters is the dedicated graphics. Like I said, my last pc was crap and my gpu allowed me to play ark with great performance and graphics, my specs are not even comparable to how horrendous my last computer was. It was literally worse then my old 200$ laptop from years ago.

Nothing I said was "unhelpful" or irrelevant. It was just nobody wanted to listen to me. Thankfully I ignored everything and figured out the issue myself which was extremely simple and super dumb on my end that I hadn't tried other maps in the first place. I guess I'm just rusty on troubleshooting since it's been a few months.

Not asking for help here ever again. I don't care if people can't figure out the problem, that isn't their problem or their responsibility, but ignoring what I was saying and acting like it didn't matter was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying. I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ done.
