Setting Up a Dedicated Server on a PS4 to Play on PC?
I have been looking around for an answer to my, possibly stupid question, and have not been successful. Maybe I am not looking in the right places or not asking the right questions to get hits on google.

I recently inherited a PS4, as I am a PC gamer I haven't done much with it. My friends and I recently were looking through games we share and ARK came up and we thought about playing it. I looked into setting up a server to try multiplayer and I didn't know the difference between a dedicated and non-dedicated server. Looking it up I read about tethering, I also saw how servers can be made on PS4s.

So my question is, can I set up a server on a PS4 and be able to connect to it via my computer? I figure this is a stupid question as I usually hear Sony do not really do cross platform compatibility. A second question would be if this is possible do I need a copy of ARK for the PS4 to run?

my guess would be no.. you can't use a ps4 as a dedicated server that pc's connect to in order to play ark. for starters there is no cross platform and the logistical nightmare of a ps4 with it's limited hardware capability being host sends shivers down my spine.. you would be better off using a hosting service like Nitrado or other to host the game for pc.. the difference between dedicated and non dedicated is in the description.. dedicated means that is ALL it does. host ark for other players. a dedicated server has many more cpu threads and alot more memory available. non dedicated does the same but with far less available resources hence the tether. something you might do with your gaming pc to play with friends if you don't want to spend money to play with friends. and since it's a home pc it will be required for other tasks or even need to be shut down so can't be dedicated to one specific task. im sure theres a way to create a dedicated server with a home pc but you would need a hell of a pc to do it and not your average gaming pc..

Nope. Different versions of the game. Cross play is not possible with PS4

Thank you for the response and explanation Dave. I figured it would be impossible but wanted to ask just to give purpose to this PS4.

What is the distance for tethering? is that reliant on stuff like the host render/draw distance? Or is it just a set number that can not be changed?

having never looked into it i can only tell you that is is adjustable and the max distance is not very far at all. supposedly there are ways to modify the distance outside of the game options how well that would work is dependant on your pc specs and the way the non dedicated parameters are defined

Thank you again for the response, I will look into it and see how that will work for me and my friends.

Total necro, but you could host this for PC on a raspberry pi 4. Not sure how many simultaneous connections you could make, but it’s possible with the 8gb ram release.

Not free, no, but $135 for a server setup you control is better than paying someone monthly.
