Dedicated server on embedded nano-PC
I plan on running a dedicated server, and I'm shopping around for a small system to run it on. I have come across a Foxconn nT-iBT29 nano-PC with the following specs:

4-core Pentium J2900 (2.4GHz, turbo up to 2.6GHz)
1xSODIMM DDR3L, 8GB max
will use a 250GB SSD
has on-board WIFI but instead I will connect it through LAN cable directly to my router, all players will connect through router

For OS I plan on installing Ubuntu 14.04, and it will run headless; not being used for anything else than the dedicated server.

For starters I want the server to be used for 2-3 players, but I would prefer if it was able to host up to 8-10 players if it needs to.

Do you think that little box can do it? I'm most concerned with the memory requirements, how many players can I host safely with 8GB (the maximum this system supports)?

Why spend the money on that and possibly piss off your ISP for running a server at home when you can just get a VPS from Vultur or other places? Seems kind of overboard for just an ARK server.

However with that said the specs you have should run an ARK server with the amount of players you specified.

1. no money involved, I can get the barebone box for free, and I already have the memory and SSD
2. I run several other servers already, my ISP is very cool and they have no problem with it.
3. the server will not be publiclly accessible (blocked at the router towards the WAN); it will be used only to play locally by clients connected directly to the router through WIFI/cable.

Thanks for the answer. I couldn't find anywhere the memory requirements per connected client.

Honestly mate for Ark I would recommend 32gb of ram or higher. It would depend on what mods you have on there, What map it is and how many people you plan on having on you're server to. the ssd sounds good and maybe the cpu. But I would also recommend xeon. You can get second hand ones for dirt cheap. (if its a private server who cares if its not new you know :P )

Hope this helps.

Reference;Bought an ark server today!

For starters I will use the default map and no mods; I'll think about other maps later. I can't put more than 8GB in that box because that's the maximum it supports. Can't change the CPU because it's soldered to the motherboard. And I want a small box because I don't have a lot of space available. This one is the size of a paperback book.
