You pet them and then for ~5 minutes your dinos near them gain experience a little faster. Doesn't affect players. You can pet them again after the 15 minutes is up. That's it.

I've got about six lystros, as far as I can tell the buff doesn't stack, petting one is the same as petting six, having more than one only increases range, doesn't seem to be a very big buff, like 5%, and it looks like the buff is the same one a lvl4 lystro as it is on a lvl 120. Also buff only lasts 5 mins not 15.

<Edit> deleted next reply as I totally misread what was said. Oops.

Buff seems much bigger than 5% to me. Much.

Oops, fixed my post to say 5. I don't know what I was thinking.

Only other reasons I can see to have two are a) each one boosts the other and b) they lay eggs which might be useful for something someday. (I suppose in theory there's also c) breeding, but these guys are so absurdly easy to get, and their stats don't matter, so why would you ever?)

When you pet a Lystrosaurus, your nearby dinos get around 37.5% more XP.

Usage:
Pet it.
Craft lots of narcotics, while your tribe member is riding a dino.
Every 5 minutes you have to Pet it again.

Usage 2:
Go outside with a Rex or a Giga and have your tribe member above you with a Pteranodon or an Argentavis with a Lystrosaurus carried up.
Kill wild dinos and get more XP for your dinos (don't forget to Pet your Lystro every 5 minutes).

If you have a relatively large base with dinos in pens, placing one in each pen is an advantage. If it's a large pen, one at each end may be needed (I found that in my long bird cage pen). They are incredibly cute to pet!!
