My new favorite Ark critter -Dire Bears
These things are awesome! They are rather slow moving at first but hold the sprint key and they ramp up gradualy to saber cat speed. Traveling long distances is great cause in the open it can out run most dangers. Trick is not to get cornered or stuck on a tree or rock. They are pretty good in combat. Theye are big and tough and have two attacks (RMB does a claw swipe attack LMB does the usual bite.) Man, do they carry the weight. The stock one I just tamed had 700+ Lbs capacity. Really great for those metal runs. You can carry alot and still keep your sprint ability. They can eat berries OR meat, which is really handy.

My Bruno is a bit near sighted (the dino glasses fit) I know that every creature has its plus and minuses, But if you're a new player I highly reccomend these bears as a good multi purpose tame.

+1 Awesome mount to have, and they get you fiber! no passive taming the gigantos.

lol. They are a classic example of the modernist devs; When the actually cool prehistoric animals are added, they are buggy, or nerfed, or over all unimpressive compared to the "basically modern" creatures. Look at Terror Bird - In the dossier, it was made out to be as tall as a real Carnotaurus, have a kick attack and be a viable creature. Meanwhile they are basically just an upgrade raptor, downgrade saber.
Or how about Pachy? In the dossier they made it out to be fast and powerful and a viable scout mount. What did they give us? A billy goat.

On the flipside, when the beaver dossier dropped, it said it would have low weight. Yet they make it nerf the weight of otherwise heavy materials and give it an amazing weight stat, along with more power then a CARNOTAURUS and just barely less HP, and made it a freaking smithy to boot. Beavers may have evolved to gather wood, yet any elephant can haul more mood and knock down trees quicker then a beaver. A beaver takes HOURS to chew a good sized tree, an elephant can causually use it's trunk(nowhere near it's full body) to knock down trees left n' right. You'd think scaling it up to a wooly mammoth vs an 8ft beaver would hold true, by logic? Ark devs be like "Fawk logic, fawk out own dossiers!"

How about the Dire Puppy, the GoT fanservice? It is smaller then a Utahraptor(irl a Utahraptor was not all that fast but heavier then a polar bear), with IRl Dire Wolves being slightly chubby Gray Wolves in stature, though the ark one is still doublt that size yet still miniature compared to even the emaciated Ark Utahraptor. Guess what? Utahraptor has 15 base damage, whilst Dire Mongrel has 45. Who jumps better, an animal evolved to pounce such on prey like Smilodon or an oversized dog? The Dire Wolf don't even need a saddle. It is so cheap! You could walk out there and ride one woithout even needing to spend 15 minutes crafting a saddle.

What about our aquatic friend in Manta? In the dossier, it is ridden bareback and is slow. Surprise surprise, Ark devs contradict their own dossiers YET AGAIN and make it the fastest creature in the game and require a saddle. They make them aggressive as well, goody!

Oh and the Dire bear? Equal power to Tyrannosaurus rex with a bite( no bear's bite could compare to that of a Tyrannosaurus rex, let alone a T. dominum which is DOUBLE THE SIZE of the actual foissil animal.) But n0p3. A somewhat large bear that has a pug face is equally powerful jaw strength. And by just doing a lazy paw smack, it has 100 base damage. It starts slow but in the blink of an eye it is freaking sanic. It can carry more then makes sense, eat berries and meat and gathers fiber...

Look, no matter how OP a creature is, is it wrong to use your brain and say "Hmmm... Should this creature be as powerful compared to this one?". It saddens me to know that most of the community is willing to accept the Dire Bear or the Beaver or Manta or Dire Bear. It is quite depressing, really. In a game initially advertised as a "Dinosaur game" with the first trailer only having Sarco, Ptera and Megalodon as non-dinos. Yet here we are. Every creature that has a counterpart you could go see at a Zoo or Sea world, or even on a hiking/camping trip, are the apex predators exlcuding the broken Giga.

Of course, many would be like "tl;dr" or "Ermagerd u do not lick the boots of da devs u r satan lemme report him!". It is because the majority of the players plain the game and are not active on the steam and survive-the-ark forums that the devs are encouraged to make creatures this way.

Any account for fun? the post was very informative, but I'd rather play a game, not a documentary...

While I love the power and utility that the direbear provides, it is pretty obvious that once they're into the beta stage in the future, that they'll be doing another stat and balancing pass that will change it's overall current OPness.

Scaling stats to the size of the animal would be a logical place to start if you ask me. Balance first, and from there adjustments and tweaks can be made that prepare creatures for their intended function.

I gotta say i agree with you 100%. some dinos are too good at everything. or too good at what they do and not bad enough at what they aren't. every dino should have a counter and every dino should have a use.

its not fair that my trike get his but handed to him by everything when IRL triceratops could have made shish kabob of a careless predator. its not fair that my anky can't hold his own against a rex when IRL they were so heavily armored even their freaking eyelids had protective bone in them and their club could snap a rexes leg like a twig!

i dunno man it just seems like they need to take the nerf bat and beat some dinos back into extinction with it. looking at you Giga!

In all fairness, Giga is supposed to be a little bit broken and nerfing its speed (making it slow like it was supposed to be) would do a lot to balance it. As for Trike and Anky, they should probably just be made bigger, stronger, higher-level dinos if we want them to give an Ark Rex a run for its money. Pachyrhinosaurus and Doedicurus could take their places at their current levels or something
Virtual Anomaly May 24, 2016 @ 6:23pm
But But......Bears are cute! Yeah I don't know how any creatures will be at the final release. My post was only about its current state.

Trikes do seem rather underpowered compared to what I understand them to have been. But then again, Trikes are very numerous in Ark, Like huge spikey Dodos. My intention was only to let newer players know about a nifty mount. And TY to Rob....I didn't even know about the fiber gathering....sweet!

Yes Ark is a dino game...the way Call of Duty is about combat. Fun...but not 100% true to life. Ark with Arma II engine?....5 mins till your a pile of Dino poo. Weeeee!

I don't play multiplayer..so I wont be coming after you with my OP bear lol

The direbear is stupidly OP. gets up to sabertooth speeds? have you seen it at full speed? It's like the 2nd fastest land animal in the game. insane weight, damage, utility. It needs to be nerfed because as it stands, it take the place of carnos, rexes, raptors, parasaurs, trikes, stegos, brontos, etc. There is literally no need for any of those dinos when you have a bear.
jjstuec May 24, 2016 @ 7:16pm
I 100% agree with you, Bears are just so sweet in this game. Great at fiber, speed, weight, stam and got the damage of a rex. And it doesn't lose all it's topor in 2 mins nor take 100000 narcs like the rest of the new animals. gotta be my new favorite. :steamhappy:
Mano May 24, 2016 @ 7:38pm
While i do agree that there are some serious size to capability ratio issues here, i understand its a game, so why the hell not :D . Its fun so that doesnt really bother me.
Ripper.rex May 27, 2016 @ 2:13pm
Couldn't have said it better Kirito.
Bears and Beavers need a serious damage nerf. Ark's Tyrannosaurus is nearly twice the size of a real one yet a bear the size of a cow can kill a 35 foot tall super predator. And the beaver can kill a tyrannosaur size Carnotaur like nothing. In reality both of them would be chew toys to even the real prehistoric counterparts of Ark's Tyrannosaur and Carno, much less the gigantic theropods of ARK.
All I can pray for at this point is Yutyrannus to have a damage buff against all mammals. We should NOT be seeing dire wolves taking down T. dominum which could eat one of those furry fantasy/wolfaboo pups in one bite like a skittle.
For those of you saying the Dire Bear and Beaver is perfect and shouldn't be re-adjusted, reaccess your life and quit licking and eating out modernist a-hole.
