Base Design PVE Hidden lake
i started doing my normal loop around hidden lake with spike walls when i noticed somthing funny wild dinos seemed to get stuck in the spike walls, now this is kinda fine but the whole point i did this was to prevent a gigga or direwolf due to the biom change and the way dinos tend to wander.

so now im stuck woundering if there is anything i can do to my base here or if its always going to end up as a sinkhole for every wild alpha/baddy to fall into.

I don't know if it's something about my server, but we've had a base at Hidden Lake for ages and never saw any alpha, giga, or anything else fall into it. Once a bronto did, but that's it. Those big-bad-carnivores don't seem to ever be wandering on the hillsides above the lake, so they never fall in. We get the occasional carno, raptor, or sarco spawn inside, that's about the worst it gets (and the beavers usually take care of those).

That the wild one that i found in my old base of offical hardcore i didnt login in time to save my 4 month of dinos. it ither spawned near hidden lake most likely in the river and was kitted down into my base. i also have had an alpha carno spawn on the ridge leading to carno island.

There is NO perfect place to build a base. The hidden lake is no exception. Alpha dinos spawn all around it so it is a guarantee that one will find it's way around to your base eventually. Work hard and build a metal structure to protect your valuables. If you have a flier, go immediately to the volcano and build some smithies. Gather metal. Get cementing paste from the beaver dams at the hidden lake. Win.

yes that has been useful just tring to find an practical way of defending my base outside of the BG wall around the whole canyon which outside of costing an lot of material and time there kinda unsightly.

I have a base in Hidden Lake on an official PvE server & it's had dino's kited in to rek my things a couple times. First time was an argent which destroyed my greenhouse. That prompted me to put up several xplants for defence against argents. Then I built a wall of around 300 normal stone dino gates around the ridge of the cliffs. I was safe for a while after that until someone managed to kite a giga over the wall somehow & that ended up killing 9 rex's (most level 220+) & some ankies level 200+. So I proceeded to build 50 stone b.gates and place them behind the normal stone dino gates. Since then, I've had no dinos kited to my base. I will take a screenshot of my base if you would like some ideas?

Thank you so much i see what you did, i think i can handle it i just need to find a decent ank so i can get started, just needed to see what i needed to do frist. i have started saddly on a metal Gate frame shell but going to stone BG with a Metal frame gate to stop them comming to close to the stone BG, dont want to add any plant-x incase i want to do any tamming localy + the wild Beavers i want to leave alone for there much needed paste.

As long as your personal dinos aren't within agro range of gigas/alphas, stone gates/stone b.gates will be perfectly fine as wild dinos won't agro your structures without being agro'd to you or your dinos first :) 2nd of all, if you want to use xplants to defend against argents being kited in, I suggest building a tall tower & planting them up there. Tall enough to be out of range of ground dinos but not taller than the b.gates :) I can get paste from the dams in my base daily, the xplants don't reach the beavers :)

Dinos will just get stuck in spiked walls unless the server is set such that the dinos take damage from them. We had this problem on our server until the settings got changed, now they ram themselves into the spikes either until they run away or die.

I don't know if he fell in or spawned there, by we had a giga there that ate all our brontos (that were parked outside our gates) when we logged in some day.

i know the one i found evedently was spoted by The river with the water fall south West of hidden lake but a friendly Firendly tribe. we just got out of a nasty war with a tribe in the northwest which didnt end cleanly thought we didnt leave any dinos, supposedly it was kitted to hidden lake with a Ptr befor they added in the fear mechanic.

If its true or not i dont know i just know a gigga losse in hidden lake is like a kid in a ball pen, after i was helped to get rid of it by the friendly tribe i lost interest in playing but that happends when you lose 64 dinos most where just for eggs.

Next day who ever kitted it came back in to finish the job looted what they could air left out of the area.

I know acording to the wiki they can spawn in all in the north, i also have seen quite a few in the area west amd due south of hidden lake.

If it wasnt a place im attached to id move else where but that well wait tell after the update. now that im playing single player only.

Herbivore Island is as perfect as it gets, really. Metal nodes on the island for when you're first starting out, no carnos, plenty of room to build on either Peninsula that jut out without affecting any spawns and easy to build about 15 tiles out into/on top of the water before it drops off, and a nice big tank to keep all your water creatures.
