How do I place an item I just crafted

My GOD - this is such a totally noob question, I'm embarrassed to ask, but I've looked in the key bindings and can't for the life of me figure out how to place an item (a crate I just created) on the ground! I'm pretty sure I've tried every key.

In your inventory, select the crate, then click the 'use' button, exit inventory, then place it.

either put in your hotbar or click on item in inventory and click use item

or drag the crate to your hotbar, then click the assigned binding while not in inventory page.

Or put in in your hot-bar and hit the # key to position, Left mouse to place, Right Mouse to cancel placing, and E to rotate before placement( for some items).

For a single item - Select the "Use" button in your inventory when you have the item selected. You'll know it's selected because there will be a blue outline on it.
For multiple items - Put it in your hotbar where you put your tools, and select the assigned hotbar number (like you would to take out or put away a weapon)

Okay something weird's going on - weird to me at least - I'm probably just not understanding some function of the game. I made a thatch foundation and was able to place that in the ways described here, but I can't place a crate no matter what I do.

The outline/shadow of the crate is green, indicating I'm trying to place it in a place it can be put down.

Okay - Whatever - I just did it. No idea why I couldn't before and why it all of a sudden worked. Ah well..

So is it the E button that uses AND Places the object on the ground?
