If they built it correctly, the turrets are firing before you get out of the water. Thus, you can't have a shield engaged to deflect. At least, if I'm remember correctly you can't block while still underwater.
Underwater Caves are nigh on impossible to raid/siege if defended correctly. The bullets are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pain in the ass to soak due to limited underwater fighting capabilities and the inability to get most large creatures into the cave (only like 3 of the cave are large enough to fit even a Plesiosaur inside).
They're not that great because quite frankly they don't swim very fast. You CAN use them, but if there's enough turrets/Plant X's the knockback won't let them in very far. I used to play on an unofficial PvP server for a short time, and I lived in an Underwater Cave. NOBODY could get in, so after awhile people just gave up trying. You can eventually break in, but it takes so damn long and so much resources that it usually means you have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blood vendetta against the tribe/guy living in the cave to do it.
The drawbacks to living down there are you also can't have any flyers down there or any large tames (and for that matter, if it's aquatic you can't store it very safely without being accessible to larger mounts and thus raidable), and you also can't access very many resources safely. Sure, whatever you build in your limited space is golden, but you're not gonna become an alpha tribe like that. More like a dot that is EXTREMELY hard to erase.
But afair you wont get the Turtle on to the Cave ground so the Turrets might be set to player only. On the other Hand you might get a beaver or a cat/wolf down into the Cave with a Lazarus Chowder applied to wreck the Turrets if they are set to player only ;-)
Not if you have overencumbered rexs on aggressive standing over the turrets.
Plessie cannons sound pretty good though, but only fits into a couple caves. They won't fit into most of them. Awesome idea though for raiding the bigger ones where they DO fit.
