Which is exactly what happened to me lol. Best of luck on capturing a manta to you. They just came out so I'm sure someone in the next few days will find a better capture strategy.
Exploded? As in died when it hit the shore, or actually exploded?
Put a foundation a stone foundation a few feet under water on the shore, stone doorway. Then have at least three walls on hand if not more, depending on how much clearance the walls have out of the water you may need to stack a extra level to keep them from jumping out of the box.
Place at least one side of the box ahead of time, then lure your manta into the box by swimming into it then out of the box through the doorway. This is the tricky part as mantas are much quicker to react than anglers, you need to fill in the other two wall tiles before it has a chance to turn and get out. Once you have your quarry heres the important part. You probably want to finish boxing it in and wall up the doorway, it cant fit through but it can see you when your swimming around and will get riled up making it harder to feed it safely. When its docile all you need to do is stay close enough to touch one of its 'wings' to feed it, which can be a little chaotic as sometimes they like to point down and spin like tops but settle down after a bit.
Noted Manta Characteristics: Fast, they get 5% movement a point, and a lvl 32 came with over 700 stamina making them superb traveling mounts. They dont have much hp however so dont do so well in stand up fights against larger creatures, however the fairly high damage they can dish out and underbelly AOE (kind of like argents) they are superb Euryptrid and Trilobite hunters.
Happy hunting! Be warned, these guys TRASH armor as fast as bats easily and without flippers most players wont be able to outswim them. (my normal server character has 300 hp and 120% movement and couldnt outswim them, but my 800 oxy primitive char could)
So i think the best way is making it attack a really high level tamed megalodon or mosa, maybe plesio but mines health wont be enough, at lv 76.
But even tho, im not sure if it would keep attacking the dino or get to you
I used someone's suggestion above about a foundation in the shallows. Built a 4x4 square foundation partially submerged (2 walls high - water half way up 1st wall) - pics below.
I went 2 high in case he tried to jump out. I put a stone dino gate on the deep water side with doors set to open out, and a single stone doorframe at the back on the shoreside. I had both open, dragged on in the open door, and swam out the back door, around to the front and shut the dino gate. Since the foundation was submerged - I could stand on it behind her and feed gel exactly as she needed it. Worked brilliantly. I didn't move an inch the entire time, and only lost a little health/armour dragging it into the pen,
Did one yesterday following it from behind, and got a level 8 tamed, and went to the shore for stamina and it beached itself and immediately died. I recommend the cage method!

1st pic above is during tame
2nd pic is almost tamed - again - neither her nor me moved the entire tame - worked well
3rd pic is from above
4th pic is from inside the 4x4 so you can see how deep it was.
Good luck all - going to try and find a nice high level now.

But it was a fairly low level one. We had a level 77 more than half tamed three times, but each time he had just done too much damage and we had to retreat, and eventually he threw himself onto the beach and exploded.
What finally worked:
* Fence foundations a few meters into the water, forming a 4x6 water-pen, with a dinosaur gate at the sea end, and all doorframes on the beach end (no doors needed). All this, including fence foundations, made of stone; they cut through wood or thatch far too fast.
* A beaver standing on the beach loaded with hide, fiber, and ingots.
* Two people in flak.
* Lots of food and medical brew, in quickslots. I mean like 50 brew and 20 food.
* No bug repellent; it didn't seem to make any difference.
One person lured the manta into the pen, the other closed it. Then both ran out and repaired armor on the beaver. Then one would go in and feed the manta until their armor started breaking or their health got too low. They'd retreat to the beaver to repair and recover, and the other would go in and feed, so the tame wouldn't reset. The manta spends most of the time attacking the stone walls, but make no mistake, when you approach it, you'll get a few hits too, so be ready with the medical brew.
It's important the pen not be too close to the shore, and that its walls are above the water surface all the way around, so the manta can't get high enough to instadie to the air.
While feeding, be careful not to let the manta get on top of you or between you and the shore. Which is wickedly easy for it to do, and it can do crazy damage to you in a few seconds if it does.
And all that for a low level one. The same strategy would work for a high level, but be prepared for many cycles, and load that beaver with a lot of repair supplies.
