Thank you for the input, however the info on that page is over a year old with the last edit being just over 2 months which was just to add an amendment to the table. And while it provides info on pelt I'm more wondering about the dire bear, experiences on raids, pvp vs pve usefulness and even anecdotal experiences like battling a Rex or an alpha raptor.
harvesting pelt i still drop a well lvl'd wolf from an argy on aggressive and let it do the pelt gathering.
Just my opinion tho
Our best imprinted bear is now sitting at 3.4k weight.
They fit thru the small dino gates making them perfect to transport stuff in our base like metal.
We dont really use them for meat gathering since there are other dinos that do it better but if you quickly need some ffiber nothing beats the Bear.
You can clean the entire volcano top with 2 good bears and an anky on a platform quetz!
So they are amazing transport dinos, and pretty decent at nearly everything else.
And in my opinion the fact that your bear's going to be gathering fiber every time it kills anything near a plant is likely to produce more fiber than you can ever use. If a gigantopithecus were an easy and quick tame, sure, the passive would be worth it. If you're taming one anyway for the dossier or just for fun, use it for that. But if it's just to get the fiber, the time it saves by having already gathered fiber is never going to make up the time it took to tame it.
If i need fiber fast right NOW i will use the bear. But i already had the apes when the bear was relased, maybe i would not have dont it then. But then on the other hand we are currently taming a lvl 116 ape =)
We have been gearing up for the cave of the strong and for the last week harvesting pelt for the Master Craft fur Hat, Leggings and boots we need.
first off we went into the snow on a cat, dog and bear. After a non scientific time frame, randomly eating stuff the three of us did an inventory check......the wolf had the most pelt.
Lots of variables could of effected this test......the player on the wolf may of targeted better dinos for pelt. The guy on the bear is a smoker, he could of stopped for a sneaky ciggy!
Off this one test we built a blender in the snow area. a nice big box with 6 high level dire wolf in.
Then using Quetz we pick up and drop in mammoth and rhino!
As someone said earlier they make great mules. Easily get one over 3k carry.
My second favorite bear is for land/cave running. At 800+% melee running mate boosted he swipes for almost 1k damage per hit. Makes pretty short wok in most caves.
But, my very favorite bear is my water bear. She has about 5.5k health, 4.5k stamina, 3.5k oxygen and decent melee, around 600% I think. She can out swim a wild mosa, outfight a wild mosa (or 3), and stay under for 15 -20 minutes at a time depending on the amount of fighting you you do.
Just make sure you have them on follow if you dismount underwater. 😏
Only drawback is that they can't jump. But don't be afraid to run one off of a cliff. Just dismount, stand on the saddle until you hit bottom, remount. No damage.
Wolves and Sabertouth are for Pelt farm Direbears good for berries and mostly fiber
I haven't tamed one yet myself but I'd say the easiest and safest way would be to grab it with a quetzal and drop it in a taming pen, then tranq it in safety. The next safest & easiest would be to use yourself as bait and lure one into a taming pen, then tranq.
Of course you could always find a nice high rock or cliff to shoot from while tranqing. Or even carry a few pillars, a ceiling, and some ladders with you to make a quick & dirty taming stand. Just run 4-5 pillars up, top it with a ceiling tile, and add ladders to climb up. Just make sure to protect your tame with wall/spike walls while it's taming.
