You'll need to host your own dedicated server. You can find info about doing this here: http://ark.gamepedia.com/Dedicated_Server_Setup

On another note, if you don't want to go through all of that, I have a brand new dedicated server with very few players on it right now, which is probably almost the same as what you're looking for. It runs very well, and will remain up for a long time.

In a non-dedicated server you and your friend are tethered to each other. If you are hosting that means when your friend tries to go do his own thing and he goes too far, he will be yanked back over to you.

If you die while he's doing something else, when you respawn he will be yanked over to you.

Some people play nondedicated but it doesn't sound very fun.

When this thread was started, you couldn't do that as far as I know. And it was a very short distance.

I found running a dedicated server then playing the client on the same machine performed better than playing via non dedicated.
