Better to grow narcoberries or harvest them?
I currently have a small farm for advanced crops, but I've been wondering if it might be a good idea to expand it to include narcoberries as well since I find myself using them thousands at a time. Can they keep up when being farmed, or is it better just to romp around the jungle with something big instead?

Farm them, especially if you have a green house, one less thing to knock off the grind list.

It will take several hours to gather 1000's at a time if you're only relying on farming. It will take several minutes if you romp around with something big. Not really a grind if you jump on one and gather and when the weight gets to be too much just transfer the narcos to your inventory, drop everything else on your dino, rinse and repeat.

I'll give it a try, though I don't have a greenhouse yet. Do berries grow faster than advanced crops?

My #1 method for narcoberries so far is parking a bronto in the berry bushes near Weathertop on TheIsland.
Go over, swing to the left, swing to the right, carry berries home, toss them in the mortar, go back to bronto, rinse and repeat.

I already know how to do that, just was wondering if farming can be a better supply. I have my growth rates turned up about 5x in my single player game, but it still takes hours to fill the advanced crops, which is why I've not started with berries, as if they don't grow faster, it will always be much more time efficient to go out and get them in the jungle.

Yep. And of course because you can plant them in small crop plots you can fit four berry bushes in the same space as one advanced crop. You'll also get up to 300 berries per plant. If you're planning on farming anything at all, a greenhouse really is a live saver. They mature and produce fruit like 3 times faster, whilst using an awful lot less fertalizer.

I have 21 plots that net me around 4,000 berries each day. :) It's very worth it to grow. Get some dung beetles.

Its on my list of things to do as I'm expanding my home base, but I haven't gotten all of the necessary engrams yet, so I've got to wait through some levels no matter what.

21 plots sounds like a lot of busy work... are you on default growth settings?

Are you sure you don't have this backwards? It takes just a few minutes to walk around the plots and pull out the hundreds of berries in each box. It takes a long time to walk a bronto to the berry patch. Then he swings and you spend forever throwing out all of the unwanted berries, thatch and wood you get. Then have to move and do it in another spot.... I find growing them much faster myself.

That's not counting green house veggies, But yes. Official PVE 334. Side note, I have 12 dung beetles to keep up with fert demand.

With all those plots youd also need the initial materials to make them in the first place and all the upkeep of fertilizer. Personally, I use plots for the veggies for kibble when I need narco berries I do the dino method, you end up with more berries than you can match with spoiled meat, and it dosent have to be a bronto. A giant ape works fine imo, but to each his own.

Farming berries will become more important once berries are switched from random to more static locations.

Get a lvl 1 stego and spend 5 minutes tail swiping and you have tons of narcs,

It will take several hours in that you have to build all the plots to begin with so theres the wood, thatch, fiber and stone requirements. Then you need fertilizer which requires you walk around and gather poop (if you dont have a poop gather mod) then wait for the compost bin to make them or go out and tame beetles (which is a chore in itself) and you still need to hang around and gather it, and as far as "taking forever" to drop dino inventory, hover over the narco's and press T all thats left use the drop all button. Like I said who says you have to use a bronto?

The plots are already built. The only time is gathering the poop for fertilizer and that takes no time at all. Making the fertilizer takes no time either, throw it in the compost bin and forget about it. Or just use the poop directly if you don't want to be bothered with that step.. Gathering berries with a dino does take time, unless you are playing on an unofficial server with high multiplier settings.

Just my opinion.
