Love it when someone says they got it to work but never explain how. But sounds like he's having the same issue. Only some of the sounds work in 5.1. Seems to be sounds coming from new content that works.
Interesting: While waiting for todays large update 245.1 I was pondering the idea of selecting the Nvidia HD in the Windows sound options to see if there was a difference from using the dedicated sound chip. I decided against it knowing that it runs off the GPU, and with the already bad performance of this game didn't want to hurt it anymore by adding more to the GPU. After the update I loaded up the game, started playing then suddenly was shocked to hear all my dinos coming from behind out of the rear speaker instead of the front. Then noticed the fire crackling behind or to the side as I turned, nicely panning around as it should. Saw a dino coming in the distance about 20 yards away. I turned around and could hear it approaching from behind....................YEAH!!!! They fixed it.
Side note: Steam only has audio settings for voice settings in chat. Nothing about in-game sound settings. Of course the Steam OS would have the settings available, but that's probably 1 gamer out of 10,000.
The software side of the surround may have issues as they fix the hardware side of it. I have never used software surround except for a short period of time. Never really seemed to work with just 2 speakers in a set of headphones. The difference in sounds between front and back only seemed to be loudness and a slight muffle. Only time I got surround out of a set of headphones was when I purchased the Altek Lansing 5.1 headphones which were great, but I could never hear my phone ring when wearing them. I moved and haven't had the need to turn down the volume or wear headphones since.
When surround sound works properly it adds a whole new level of immersion to any game. With it the immersion level jumps about 50% for this game. Even helps negate the bad performance, even though it's still there.
Most PC mobos have decent sound chips on them today. Having a descrete Sound Card like in the past isn't necessary for gaming. I use to always buy the best SB card on the market, using it for other things than games. Last 2 PC builds I just made sure the mobos had good sound chips on them. Bought the cheepo but decent Logitech 5.1 speakers and it's not bad. But it doesn't beat the Cambridge Soundworks digital speaker set on the old PC that IMO sound better than some Bose speakers I've heard. Bad thing is in those days Sound Blaster partnered with Cambridge for that speaker setup and made a propriatary plug that only worked on that 1 SB sound card.
There are some true 5.1 USB headsets out there that work really well. That would probably be the best ticket.
