Getting ARK to run better on servers?

I have been trying to find a server for a while now but I have been sticking to solo for 1 main reason. When I play online the server lag makes fighting a dilo feel like a boss battle because of how horrible the hit detection is and how the spit basicly has a 90 percent chance to hit you. Sometimes dinosaurs dont even spawn (and Im not on an extinction server). I was wondering if there was a way to make ARK actually playable online. If so please tell me how to fix it.

Ark is a laggy game still, will be for some time. But are you 100% sure that it is not your computer and internet that is the fault?

Not laggy for me. I run a linux server (ubuntu 14 server/headless) with both ARK and Minecraft on the same VM. No problem. Linux box is remote to me, though still in the state. It's an old Dell 2950 G4 or 5, I think, running ESXi to host the environment.

If you're having trouble, then you're either experiencing network latency (google that) or, if you're in single player using the 'host / local' button instead of 'join,' then you probably have crummy hardware. What sort of video card, CPU and RAM are you on?

@I forgot my name: That's fascinating, "laggy game still." Your mileage may vary, I suppose. Have you looked at some Let's Play videos on Youtube? Do those videos compare to your experience? Don't forget that some of the pro YouTubers are not only playing the game, which is demanding, but they're also running video and/or audio capture.

Clearly, the only thing standing between your gaming enjoyment and that of others may be a pocketbook deep enough to get the PC you need, or even just parts. I'd be interested to know what you're using to play.

Personally, I have an i7-4790 @ 3.6ghz, 16gb ram and an old 970 (Feb 2015). I'm still using spinning rust and I have no problems gaming. Hell, I usually dual screen with ARK on one monitor and a TV show on the other (I've been binging on Lost Girl to help wile away the boring tames).

I have fast internet and a PC strong eough to run ARK just fine and every time I run ARK there are these annoying lag spikes, almost in a pattern. Every 30/45 secs I get a studder of 3 to 5 seconds, any time Im on a online server, the worst being Officials but really any online server. Funny thing, even when I host my own private game it still does it, its something in ARKs netcode etc that is doing it. No other game I run, out of MANY games, does this.

The only lag in a pattern is the worldsave, which is about 15 minutes. Might be something in your settings. Try lowering each setting one at a time to find out what causes your stuttering.

Ok. I play ark on an ASUS gaming laptop (I dont know which version) and I have found settings to make my singleplayer game run smoothly. I am pretty sure it is just server lag. I have been mainly on official servers so I will try some unofficial so see if they run better.

well WHICH laptop or at least telling us the hardware would help a lot. Most unofficial servers don't lag at all. only the official servers are known for laggs

*No Passive Dino Killing - PVP is encouraged, base raiding is expected, butchering all of someone's passive dinos and leaving them with absolutely nothing in the process will absolutely not be tolerated, there is no reason to strip someone of all their hard work even in PVP.
*No nekkid beach newbie griefing - If people are in thatch, with no tames, leave them be unless you're offering them a helping hand. There's no reason to make someone's first impression of the game negative.
*No cave blocking, cave building is fine but expect to be blown up with the cave structure damage increase.
*No building under obelisks, or in heavy Metal spawn areas, You are free to build to the side as long as it isn't preventing resource spawns, Building directly on top of a mountain covered in metal and effectively blocking 1000+ Metal from spawning is just plain stupid.
*No racism/hate speech, it's 2016 you can be a ♥♥♥♥♥♥, just don't say ignorant ♥♥♥♥.
*Don't build DIRECTLY next to another base, this is not so much a rule as a common courtesy, give people room to expand, The Center is a massive map with more than enough room to spread out!

Also, the no passive dino slaying will be enforced. Accidents CAN happen, be careful where you park your dinos in/at your base. Leave a quetz by your vault? That's your bad, but if you have it parked on the third floor with nothing around and someone kills it for no reason, there will be consequences. Tranqing someone's dinos and taking the saddles however is fully acceptable.
We will not tolerate admin abuse. Admins will be using kick and ban to enforce server policy only. AKA, you can attack us, raid us, etc, we will not kick/ban you, we will come attack you back. Unless you're just that scary ;(.

The thing is I am pretty sure its not computer lag. The reason I think that is because I tweaked a few settings and got singleplayer to run very well while still having the game look great. I can play singleplayer and the most lag I get is a few spikes every 15 minutes or so. But the moment I get on a server most of the time the latency makes killing easy dinos nearly impossible.

I am pretty sure the reason for that is high ping so I am pretty sure I just need to find a server with lower ping. (I am not going to read a huge wall of text about your server)
