Don't Get the Canteen

I have the canteen but I don't get how to use it. I tried to put it on the belt and even tried use item in the inventory. I've also jumped in the water and put my head under.

How do I fill it and use it?

Walk into the water so you are barely in it. Then hit use item in your inventory or hit the number that you had for your quick slot. You use it the same way you use a waterskin of water bottle.

No it's whatever button on your hot bar you have it assigned to, mine is on 0 so I press that when in water to fill. You get three full drinks from a canteen

Canteens are far from useless. It's lightweight, holds more water than a jar or skin, and can be used to cook.

The Canteen holds three drinks and doesn't leak. Far from useless. Put it into a tap to fill or stand in ankle deep water, select it in inventory and hit "use item". This will fill it. You can also fill it when it is raining in the same way.

You need something like 900 crafting speed to make anything useful. plus you need to grow crops which need water and fertilizer, then 100 water for each drink you make. If you use a jar or canteen for the water source the cooking pot uses all of the water in that container(Devs never fixed that bug) so for each drink you make you could be wasting 100 to 200 water.

Totally missing the point and also almost entirely wrong. You can make a drink recipe with berries, so no need for crops and fertilizer; and you can use any quantity you like. The resulting beverage doesn't weigh a lot and doesn't leak. It doesn't matter at all that it uses up a lot of water while you're making it because you're making it somewhere where you have plentiful water. Crafting speed doesn't matter at all if you're just making a drink to be a portable water source that doesn't leak.

That said, the canteen is more convenient because you can refill it on the go in the rain or at any body of water, but you have to go home to get a few more beverages from your preserving bin or fridge. I use recipe drinks at low levels to avoid the leaking waterskin and the heavy water jar, but then switch to a canteen once I can make one.

Its 4 rockcarrot for full water at lvl 50.

And you need 2 mind wipe tonics to be able to craft that recipe.

You don't get the recipes, you make them. All it takes is a note, a cookpot, and a few minutes.

And you don't need rockarrot for a drink recipe. Berries will do fine.

It also takes very high crafting speed to make a recipie that is of any value.

Making a drink recipie with 100% crafting speed will require 635 berries to make a drink that restores 100 water and weighs 6.92. If a focil chili is used it drops the berry requirement to 282 and the drink only weights 2.92.

With 690%(Level 50 with all points in crafting + a focil chili) only 76 berries are needed to make a drink that restores 100 water and weights only 0.86

Note: Crafting speed is only a factor when making the recipie it doesn't matter when actually using it.
