I am inclined more to have a designated spot where I just park them, largely without structures.
on my current round, I'm planning to try to build a primarily vertical "shelf" storage for dinos that are primarily egg layers, but just park the ones that are in active utility.
"wander" is nice in some ways... but in large its just inconvenient.
try thinking vertically. store dinos on ground, then build a platform above em and store more on top. more efficient that way. Just be aware that dinos will occasionally fall thru the ceilings.
the larger dinos we just kept in a big yard outside, walled off with 4 high stone walls. Each group of dinos had at least 1 rex or spino as guarddog.
Do note this was on PvE, so we actually had the time to build this big. if you're on pvp, might be different.
behemoth gate sized dinos stay outside.
outter wall should have a behemoth gate so they can come and go as needed.
I thought about that too but what doors do you use, or do you only enclose smaller creatures ?
But in hostile environment we have a 4x4x2 Behemoth Gate "Box Fortress" with walls behind the gates of height 3+ with 4 "levels" inside, all reachable with ramps. That way we currently store ~40 rexes, 15 argens, 14 rhinos, 10 quetz, 10 doeds, 8 ankys, 6 beavers, 3 gigas and 50-60 smaller useless dinos in one building. It has a cellar below the "big box" with all crafting/storage/breeding needs. That way we can easily navigate to each dino without getting stuck. Only negative side is that some rexes (the bad ones) are stuck back behind 10 other rexes so you will probably never again move them^^
My personal favorite thing to do is, that i secure non rideable small dinos, like dilos, dimetrodons, etc. with wood at their place so they do not get ruined when mistakenly whistling "follow all".
At "beginning stages" double walls are usually not the way you go since it's expensive. I would build a not too ugly looking rather large "hall" with 6 height or 12 height with 2-3 floors. That ways you can store very many dinos without having too much problems.
I play on a server with the GateMod installed, so I just use whichever gate they can best fit in. I guess in vanilla, dino gates for most of everything will be the way to go, and one enclosed garage can fit one mid sized dino or at least two raptor-sized dinos.
If you feel that a dino-gate garage is too big for something like, say, a lone anky, you can store more in it by making the garage have two "floors" with a ramp at the side opposite the gate (since a dino gate is 4 walls high, you can have each floor be two walls high). I hope that made sense.
Last time I played (had a 6 month break), two-high walls were not enough to move around ankylos without a problem, as they got stuck on the ceilings. needed at least 3 walls high. might be fixed, might not be. worth testing I guess?
