Swamp Fever - The Facts
OK guys, I see a lot of disimformation and scare mongering being, ahem, spread about the new Swamp fever disease, so let me lay out the facts for you guys.

How do I catch Swamp Fever

Swamp fever can be contracted in 2 ways. 1) being bitten by a diseased leech and 2) getting too close to an infected player or dino.

Can dinos catch swamp fever?

Tamed dinos with the exception of Dodo's can only catch it if bitten by a diseased leech.
Wild dinos cannot catch it at all.
Tamed dodo's can catch it the same as players, ie, getting too close to an infected player or dino.

What are the effects of swamp fever? Will it kill me or my dinos?

You cannot die from Swamp fever. You can however die from not removing a diseased or normal leech in time as it will continue draining your health until it is removed. Remove leeches from dinos by holding E over them and selecting remove leech from the wheel. You can remove leeches from other players in the same way, or remove them from yourself by standing on top of a forge or cooking pot. However, I repeat the Swamp Fever itself will not kill you

What it will do however, is give you a permanent stats reduction, slowed stamina regen and movement, and increased water consumption, an annoying overlay, and some regular coughing sfx until it's cured.

Diseased dinos have the reduced stats and stamina regeneration.

Diseased dinos and players are signified by regularly coughing, and having a green cloud floating about their heads (this is quite hard to see on smaller dinos so take care taking them into the swamp)

The disease is permanent until a cure is administered. for players this means that killing yourself and respawning will not get rid of it. You must take your medicine.

So what's the cure then?

You must administer any infected dinos or players with a basic antidote. This can be made by learning the engram and crafting in a mortar and pestle with 10 Rare Flowers 10 Rare Mushrooms 1 Rhino Horn and 5 Leech Blood. If you have a chemistry table use 4 times the ingredients and you can make 6 vials at a time. Leech blood is obtained of course from wild leeches. Using a hatchet is the best method to obtain it, but obviously the most hazardous as you risk being attcked by other leeches whilst you harvest.

When administering the cure, make sure to treat any infected dinos first before treating yourself.

How do I prevent myself or dinos from catching it?

Well, first and foremost, avoid the swamps. Leeches can be found throughout it. Diseased leeches which carry the disease are labelled as such, and have a slightly red colouration. They also give a higher drop of leech blood so if you do have to go looking for them for the antidote they're worth looking out for.

Avoid any players or dinos that you see with the green cloud above their head.

Up your fortitude. Higher fortitude will give you a percentage chance of avoiding contracting the disease, but will not prevent it entirely. The highest available chance is 80% with 120 fortitude.

OMG, I play on PvE, can someone come around and infect me?

No. If you play PvE, then you can only be infected by players and dinos from within your own tribe.

This sucks, the devs suck, the game is ruined forever and I'm never playing it again.

Ok, you're in game right now, but ok ;)

is that disease a bad joke?
Think about it: new player that have just bought the game:

Wakes up on beach near swamp. Hasn't played, does not know the areas or threats. Gets infected. Level 1, instantly super disadvantaged and given bad vision (I heard it fogs your display?). So how to cure? Oh, they must navigate to the coldest area, while not freezing to death, defeat a rhino with primitive weapons (whilst not being eaten by the packs of dire wolveS). Then they must locate flowers, mushrooms, and then hatchet leeches to get the cure. Metal hatchet? Does stone hatchet work?....
This.. on top of if they join a PVP server, having any progress wiped out constantly by KOS'rs.

Even a tribe of level 20 or so? They have maybe a few pet raptors, or a carno... instantly infected, start dying. They now need many rhino horns but do not have the fur armors or the mounts to survive the dangerous snow to get these horns

seriusly how in the ♥♥♥♥ing hell they didnt think about this implications? if i ddi read right the disense remain trough death how the ♥♥♥♥ a new player could possibly deal with something like this? not to meantion the ENDLESS GRIEFING posisbilities, wich are already ahppening on a lot of pvp servers... really im speechless

ah and you cant even stock your antidote for future use..since looks like it last only 3 hours

What happens if you get infected and you go kill yourself (on purpose) and spawn at base?

Death does not cure the disease.

Do you like the general idea of adding diseases to the game? Or do you like how it is implemented currently?

If the latter, then the question posed by other players is a good one. What is a new survivor supposed to do if they get the disease? There is no way to craft a cure early on, so...what is the gameplan?

Just wait until someone makes a character just for giggles, deliberately gets infected and spreads it around on purpose.

If that hasn't happened already, I'm shocked. :)
