One thing - if you've changed the difficulty setting in the menu options, it won't clear out existing critters. You might have sort of made it even harder if you turned it down after you started, actually. The ones that spawned at normal difficulty will probably have higher level ranges than anything spawning at Difficulty 0, so any of them that are left are free to run amok until they get killed or tamed. If you're playing singleplayer or a private server, you might need to DestroyWildDinos and properly reset the local wildlife.
Most of the time, critters seem to actually be more spread out on Scorched Earth than on The Island, at least in the easy areas. I think you just had a run of really bad luck. If you decide to keep going, I hope you have a better run on a future attempt.
My only question would be where to find silica pearls in SE. Found silk.
Yours too, Ember. Didn't know the game worked like that. Kinda stupid if you ask me. Thanks for the advice.
I thought it was fun trying to survive in the harsh desert with all the raptors, wolves, sabertooths and terror birds. It was rough and I died a bunch of times but it was great once I got up and running.
Cactus works, its just that you gain the water while hitting the cactus.
Only issue you will have is when you need crystal and obsidian as the closest mountains about a km away.
Silica pearls can be found in the water of the lake directly under the green obelisk, or inside the water filled canyon that runs through the middle of the map. In the canyon, they're not actually in the water, but rather along the ground above the water. They're very hard to spot in the day, but at night they still sparkle. They kinda look like sand colored shells, which blend into the ground itself. I suggest going to look at night so you can spot the sparkles. Once you've seen what the shells look like, they're easy to see during the day.
Heres a map of where I've found silica pearls in the canyon. This is by no means a comprehensive map though. They're kinda spread out all over the place down there. This is also a very dangerous place. That canyon is absolutely full of dire wolves, sabertooths, scorpions, and terror birds. Come prepared.

I'd also suggest looking back at my previous post. I edited a lot more information into it.
Nothing beats fighting a level 1,000 dodo of death.
