Intel Core i7-6700K Processor vs Intel Core i5, should I upgrade?
I have an Intel Core i5 (CPU 750 @ 2.67 GHz), should I upgrade to the i7-6700K or is there a chip that does better or slightly worse than the i7 at a better price?

EDIT: I have nowhere to ask questions but here on Steam, so.

A Skylake cpu with a 980Ti gpu is a well balanced system. I'm not saying there are not better out there, but I have no complaints. 8]

My system is as follows:-

OS Windows 10 Home 64-bit
M/B ASUS Z170-DELUXE (LGA1151) DDR4 ATX MB
CPU Intel Core i7 6700K @ 4.3GHz(O/C) Skylake
Corsair H110i GT CPU Cooler
RAM 16.0GB Corsair Dominator DDR4 (15-17-17-35)
Graphics 6GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Posiedon.
Storage 931GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB (SSD) <<== O/S Drive
7452GB Seagate ST8000AS0002-1NA17Z (SATA) <<== Games Drive
Power Supply Corsair AX860i 80+ Platinum
Your CPU is... interesting. A very old intel core, first i aye?

I suggest a total update, mate, if you were going complerte PC gamer total. And even then... Well, Aye... Mobo, ram and CPU will need chaning on that thing.

Fir tgus game... Not so much. So take everything I sat with an extra healthy dose of salt.

Hmmmm

Sockets Supported LGA1156

Ya, forget it...

yeah. Itt's pretty old. My I got 16 GB of ram, so I'm good there.
If you're on a budget or want to wait a few months to upgrade*, try some overclocking. A mild OC is no stress on this CPU -- by default the CPU will boost from 2.66 Ghz to 3.2 GHz when using only one or two cores, but drops down to 2.8 Ghz when using 3 or 4 cores. If you can set it to run at 3.2 GHz for all four cores, that's a nice boost for only a few watts of heat. Beyond that, pushing to 3.4 GHz on all four cores should be easy. This may be enough to delay an upgrade if that's what you want to do.

Otherwise, the 6700K is a great CPU. *A faster 7700K won't be here until January, and that should only be about 10% faster, mainly due to clock speed (4.5 Turbo vs 4.2 Turbo).. so not worth waiting. If you upgrade to Skylake there are many other benefits for you:

- PCI Express 3.0 (2x bandwidth for your 980Ti)
- USB 3 (lots of them) and USB 3.1
- SATA 6 gbps (your board may only have SATA 3 gbps)
- M.2 (32 gbps for SSD's)
- DDR4 (16GB is CHEAP on DDR4 compared to DDR3); consider faster memory though like DDR-3000 as that helps the 6700K.

*The 'next' upgrade in January (Z270 chipset) will add support for Intel Optane.. that is going to be an even faster replacement for SSDs, but will probably be expensive for a couple of years.

Finally, AMD Zen will be out in the next 3 months - definitely before January. This may be competitive with 6600k/6700k and at a better price.
I have a 6700 with a 1080 and a 4790 and honestly I was disappointed with the 6700 and prefer the 4790 setup
I also have a laptop with a 6700 hq and only a gtx980m and 32 gb 2133 Megs of ram and it does well in epic at around 50-60 fps
So I guess it all depends
Just research well before commiting to anything
To be completely honest, the 4790k is still perhaps the best gaming processor on the market right now,especially if you aren't water cooling. And in a lot of benchmarks online (just Google it) the 4790k beats the 6700k in gaming.

You can definitely tell that comparing the 2 I get a 5-10 fps boost with the 4790 and it really shines if I have nothing running in the background the 6700 is nice if I am gaming and running a macro program
Mods and web browser
But in head to head str8 gaming the 4790 is pwnage
The 6700k is just about the best gaming CPU you can get. Definitely better than your old CPU. And definitely better than the 4790 some are trying to steer you to. If you do get a new system, the 6700 would be the best choice.
