Black pearls disappearing???

I was just on my aberration official server and was trying to give someone 500+ black pearls I'd hoarded for their gift of an otter to me. I dropped the pearls from the stash of two diplos and they vanished! The other person thinks they fell through the map. Is this some sort of bug or are black pearls untradeable?
This was my first time ever trying to trade anything and am upset that I botched it somehow. Anybody know what happened and have any idea how to avoid it in the future?

As a rule of thumb, when moving important things like black pearls, move them into an inventory, like an unlocked box, and have the other person grab them from the inventory.
It is possible for dropped items to fall through the ground, and that's what it sounds like happened.

Thanks for the advise. It was my first transfer to someone else. I feel so bad but next time I'll make a storage box.

Another trick to try not always with a good success rate is if you use a whipe it picks up dropped items and if an item is just what you can see but not fallen through it can sometimes grab it
