too cold
I got a dilo egg, and it complains it is too cold. I put three standing torches around it and it still says too cold. What else can I do to make it warm?

moar fires = moar heat, needed 18 of em for my last Wyvern egg... Fireplace and especially AC Units help alot also!

Does the game care if my structure is enclosed or if the roof is open as far as temp changes?

I don't think so. Just add more heat sources.

It cares a little, A structure will add 112 heat resistance and 56 cold resistance. A airconditioner adds 100 to both. 1 ac in a building should be enough for a dilo egg. Certain areas of the map are warmer and colder too. Hold H to see the temperature for the biome your in and compare it with this chart. https://ark.gamepedia.com/Breeding#Times_for_Breeding

Does your server have Advanced Rafts? If so, build two or three incubation bins. Load each one with some sparkpowder and you will be fine. You will not need to monitor the temp - just make sure the egg is dropped in one of the bins.

Hmm, a stone fireplace did the trick. I got a baby dilosaur, but umm his name is red and after the egg hatched, he seem to have buried himself under my house? I dunno how that happens. Can I not hatch stuff inside? Is he gone forever? Dead? Should I demolish all my floors and try to get to him?

you have to hit the "E" key to claim it. if it phased thru the floor, yes you have to pull it up to get at it.

As a general rule, hatch babies on a second floor or similar platform so if they hatch and fall through the collision, you can still claim them.

Also keep in mind if you dont press E and claim and feed(by hand, putting food in the baby's inventory) soon their food stat will hit 0, they'll start loosing health, and then die.

You have to feed them by hand until they are juvenile stage and then they can eat from a trough. Just make sure to keep the trough filled as babies eat alot.

@Fleshbits, I know you got it with a fireplace but just want to check on something. Were you using S+ standing torches ?
Question I ask is S+ standing torches don't produce heat, if you don't have S+ installed than ignored what I just said.

Its a mod called Structures Plus or S+ for short. Its the most popular mod used by players and has -alot- of different things to it. Too much to list all here.

Keeping eggs warm is straight forward. Build a house with roof anywhere and add as many standing torches as you need. Keeping them cold is a bit more difficult, you can try in the snow biome but its hard to regulate... when you get to those advanced eggs you just want an enclosure with AC units. 18 should be enough to incubate any egg.

When the egg hatches you are stuck there for quite some time... have your food/fridges nearby. First thing to do is claim the baby, then disable wandering (it will default to wander). Now you have to put food in its inverntory, the rub is that as a baby it only has limited carry capacity... enough for like 5 berries or meat. As it grows the carry limit slowly rises... once it reaches 10% of its carry weight (and maturity) you can stuff a ton of food in a trough and it can feed from that allowing you to be free from slavery !

Closed roof to give Home buff will increase insulation.

Standing torches are cheap, drop 20 of them close together and light them up one at a time until it is happy. Monitor though because needs may change as ambient temperature changes.
