Question about "Taming" and "Tranq Arrows."

Howdy.

Recently, I feel like I'm doing something wrong or I cannot understand how this works. In the Wiki, on each dinos' page, there is a little table that says how many arrows a dino of certain level needs, for example, the Trike at lvl 30 needs 8 tranq arrows from the bow. However, I tried to tame a lvl 4 Trike, used 30 arrows and it didn't work.

Can someone explain this?

Trikes have a big plate on their head that blocks shots. You need to shoot a trike in its body/butt; if it hits the head it will do almost no damage.

Thanks, I'll try hitting them in the body next time.

However, my question was more oriented towards the amount of arrows stated. I tried taming a Therizinosaur that was near my base and had to fire almost 20 arrows and the dino wasn't going down. Around 30ish arrows and then it ran away. The Theri was barely lvl 3. And according to this Wiki thing, a lvl 1 Theri only needs 11 arrows (from fully draw bow), not 30+.

I feel like I lose more than I gain from trying to tame dinos, and the only dinos I can tame are Dilos sinces they are very easy (2 or 3 shots with the slingshot and they are done).

Something you can also try is what I call the 'five second rule'. When you fire a tranq arrow, wait five seconds before firing another one, as most of the topor application from narcotics happens over time, and these applications do not stack. Since bows fire very quickly compared to their crossbow and longneck rifle counterparts, you could be wasting most of your arrows' potential.

A: trikes need to be hit in the body, not the head. They take reduced damage/torpor when aiming at their head.
B: The wiki shouldn't be taken as the be all end all, there are times where the wiki has been inaccurate or just straight been wrong, so take what the wiki says as an average and bring more resources just in case.

also don't use the bow, its pointless for taming. Crossbow is WAY more effective.

At the time I did this thread, I lack the crossbow but since I got it, taming become insanely easy. Got myself a Therizinosaur that only used 10ish bolts, way better than 30 arrows, and a couple of more dinos for travelling around.

Still on topic, should I upgrade to the rifle as soon as I can or the crossbow will be useful later on?

Rifle is a must for many dinos like doedec, bears etc...It's essential to do minimum health damage to those. But rifle tranq darts can become costly very fast.
i 'd advise to use crossbow vs high hp pool dinos and rifle vs low hp dinos in general. you can also mix both, switch to rifle in middle of taming when you see your tame is bleeding seriously.
When you are rich just exclusively use rifle + shocking tranq darts for everything.
