How to snap fence supports straight?
Can't figure out how to use fence supports, they only snap at 45 degrees. They do not work like fence foundations, which is great (sarcasm intended). Pressing Q doesn't help, sometimes (when a miracle happens) I get 90 degrees rather than 45 when pressing Q, but never a straight line. Cannot use them. Seems I'm not the only one googling around but I can't find anybody figuring this out without using S+ mod, which I'm seriously considering right now as this is super frustrating.

Thanks for the tips.
Cheers

It's all about where you stand. This is true for the s+ version.

It can be done but it's MUCH harder without S+.

I've tried for an hour or so, it is way too hard. Fence foundations are way easier (and they are not really good™).

If it's really a matter of super fine tuning positioning I consider them as broken, there is enough frustration in this game. Building mechanics should be much smoother than what it is. At least you can pick up structures now, but I would have hoped they would have done a better job given they just included stuff from an existing mod, and apparently they worsened it :/

I was afraid so. I'll have a look if it's possible to disable all the extra stuff on S+ and keep only the structures. That sucks though... building really needs some tweaking in this game.

Thank you.

Not sure about building in vanilla, but, in S+ when you find a snap point you can cycle through possible points with "Q" and facing direction with "E". So much easier.

Those are vanilla functions, not S+

Yes Q and E for snap point change and rotation are vanilla, but they don't help for me. As I said in the first post hitting Q never offers a straight option. I wouldn't mind if it actually worked this way.

In S+ I understand you can use G to force the direction you are looking for, making it way easier

I personally gave up on the fence supports, at least for a while. When I get my patience back I will try again.

Yeah I was loosing my mind too, this is so broken. I tried S+ and it's another planet. I can build with it. Too bad it's not in the official game...

In the old days when we placed fence foundations in vanilla we learned that where we were standing mattered the most " .- - - " The . being where player is standing and - would be fence foundations already on the ground, first - would be the fence foundation player is currently holding, sometimes standing on the edge of existing fence foundation when placing new ones worked too.

If the ground is flat then place a regular foundation on ground and snap fence foundation to its edge on the ground and repeat. Pillars can snap to fence foundations and regular foundations, this helps for aligning things too. (If none of this makes sense... don't worry, most of us hate the building mechanics and don't understand it either).

It does make sense. And that's right snapping on foundations makes it is much easier (as long as you don't want 45 degrees at least), so you could do what you described and then pick up the foundation and repeat without loosing resources. But I'd rather install S+ mod and live happy for now, hoping it will not break after the next ARK update... It would be great if they could just fix the basic building mechanics in the game. It's great they added S+ structures with an update, but they just did half of the job apparently.

S+ uses G to cycle through snap points on the fence supports.
Castigo Jun 26, 2019 @ 12:58pm
Yeah exactly, and that works great! Cannot say the same of the vanilla structures.

had the same problem, figured out a pretty easy way to put supports in a straight line on foundations laid on uneven ground. I just got the game so I don't know if S+ is built in, but I didn't need to use any keys to futz with it.
Stand right on the fence foundation or right off the end of it, look straight down at the snap point, The support will jump back and forth from either side of the foundation mostly. Once it's directly on top of the support, place it. It will have both supports correctly on the foundation.
Not sure yet, but I think this will make my fence even on uneven ground.

A bit late here but I bet someone will still stumble upon this just as I did right now.

I played around with fence supports for quite a bit before I found a decent workaround: I would put the support on 45° where it pretty much defaults, then put another and another until third or fourth finally goes to direction I want it to.

Then just quickly pick up the earlier ones that were pointing in the wrong direction.

Not the perfect way to handle it but at least they're somewhat usable now.
