Go out to tame a raptor, lose a raptor to piranha using a hunting Sarco.
So I'm sailing along the shore looking for a raptor or Pteranadon to tame and a sarco grabs my raptor off the back of the raft (he had to have been in the deeper water for some reason as I didn't see him on shore). So I hop off and help kill him but a piranha swarm finishes off the raptor before I can do anything to get him clear.

I am REALLY getting to hate those fish.

I can fully understand your feelings. Similar things happened to me, too, but I got used to it with time. Once I started taming a pteranodon, he fell unconcious into the water, and the piranhas enjoyed the meal. At least THEY were happy :D

Ark has a very dangerous learning curve. I learned to check my surroundings all the time. Ichthyornis and Pegomastax were my special angry makers, and still are, as they steal so many times things from me, especially food. On the other hand, would it be a survival game without any challenge? ;)

I will stop and kill any Ichythornis or pegamastix on sight.

What angers me about piranha is if your playing on higher difficulties they're a serious challenge by themselves fast, high damage, high hp (try killing a 120 piranha it takes awhile). Then you add in your difficulties in water and the fact they swarm from beyond your line of sight so you can't just ease into the water and look around to see if there's a nearby piranha you have to wait and give it time to get over to you.

They're just unbalanced in my opinion especially since they're everywhere. Sure there are other dinos who do the same/more damage but you can see them coming and dodge or prepare for them. It just feels wrong for my raptor to be attacked by a Sarco and my response to be hop in and help but the minute I see the piranha I know its dead and there's nothing I can do to stop it.

Yea puranhas and other small critters are very annoying to noobs
To avoid such situations build some walls around your raft
Ah and also there's leedsychtis which can insta break your raft,be careful
Better not to travel by water at all at low levels

I was using it to avoid the spinos, alpha carnataurs and T-rex's on land. My beaches seem to get a lot of them for some reason. So far I've had 2 of each plus raptors, therizinos and dilo's. Of course when i try taming a raptor pack they all dissapear. I was trying to stay in the mid water too shallow for a leed but too deep for a land dino. Was looking for either raptors or a pteranaod. Found a 90ish Pteranadon so now I can venture inland for crystal and an argent.

Common issue with Island map,the southern beach is full of alphas.
But still it's better to travel on land, just do not get close to alphas and they'll ignore you.Tame a gallimimus, put some pevels into speed and stamina and you'll easily escape from alphas. Also wild t-rex isn't really dangerous, you can kill him on foot using a shotgun, even high level raptor can kill wild rex, spino isn't a big problem too

I wouln't have thought a shotgun could kill a lvl 100 T-Rex before it eats you?

Anyway I have air support now I just need to get an Argent and I can look for somewhere away from the beach to settle.
yes you can kill a rex before he eats you.Craft metal armor, put levels into health(idealy you need no more than 500) and you can easily kill lvl 100 t-rex.He has around 3-4k health, gray shotgun(100% damage) does 500+- dmg per shot which means you need 6-8+- shots to kill him.Spino has lower health, shouldn't be a problem.Alphas have 10k+ health, you need a sword with over 400% dmg and good yellow or blue metal armor to kill them on foot, nut better a tamed rex or similar

Ah I don't want to invest that much in health at this stage and I didn't have metal armour when I ran into that Rex, didn't even had Chitin.

Hmm i just use an easy to tame Dimorph pack, preferrably i get a female and a male and just breeed them non-stop, get about 20 of them and you can pretty much kill anything on land, get about 40 and you can slaughter a Giga. If you use S+ stuff the nest is ideal for this.

Can literally rule the ARK with just a flock of Dimorphs.

My dinos tend to get eaten when I try to expand packs hence this thread actually as I was out looking for a replacement Pteranadon or more Raptors and the one I had became fish food. Quite a few dilos, raptors, 1 pteranadon and a trike have gone down various throats. Its why now I have enough resources to support it I'm relocating away from the beaches.

Strength in numbers, you can make yer flock of Dimorphs inside a 2x2 thatch hut, wait for them to just breed yer army, then storm down the beach like a boss.

BTW, Dimorphs are the little flying lizards and get really angry when you hit them by accident call in there brothers and sisters nearby and hit as hard as a Carno/Bary.

Get on yer Trike (good place to sit even with Alpha Raptors), Whistle the flock to follow the Trike, make sure you have "Attack this target" set to a key you can easily access, and proceed to slaughter.

As long as you keep a male and female in reserve you can always reconstitute yer army.

I did this with Troodons once, wow that was insane, but Troodons are one of the hardest tames. Having to tame a good male and female was a giant PITA, But Troodons are nasty when bred and have levels pumped into them.

Dilo packs are kinda fun too, but they are slow, easy to get a bunch of tamed Dilos and slow march down the beach with them, big problem with dilos, they always try to spit first, so faster dinos like raptors can avoid that alot.

Gotta risk it, near the swamp you find alot of Dimorphs, start with a Dilo pack 5-10 beach tames, no need for breeding Dilos, then go on search for Dimorphs.

I was hoping to breed raptors actually they've all been eaten now.
