Are Maewings considered to be Flyers?

A few of us are going to do the Island Tek Cave tonight without dinos.
In the first phase the game does not allow flyers or Tek suit jet packs, so I will be gliding down with a glidesuit.
Another player thinks a gliding Maewing will be easier.
Has anyone tried that? Does the game allow it? Just wondering.

I usually use an Archaeopteryx, so long as you're gentle with toggling glide on and off, you should be able to maneuver to the end no problem.

Question is whether a Maewing can be used in the first section.
