Building A Catwalk

I recently tried to build a catwalk starting it on a wood platfrom. I was only able to build two catwalks forward because I kept getting an error telling me that it didn't have any support. I tried another platform as well as a wooden post/pillar but neither worked. Note that this was over water, I was building a bridge. Any ideas?

When you say wood platform do you mean a foundation/ceiling structure or an actual wooden tree/cliff platform? Are you using any mods, S+ in particular? S+ has a setting to remove the need for foundation support, otherwise i would make the bridge out of thatch ceilings first, and every other ceiling put a pillar to the ground untill you span the distance you desire. Than remove the thatch ceilings and replace with the catwalks.

You can only build out 2 foundations before you need to drop a pillar.... or have a row of connect foundations/pillars in line with your bridge under the water.
