There is nothing better than crafted spikes. Slap them down, with spaces between, step into the space, aggro a mob, step behind the spike.
Edited note: relative to the cost of obtaining the resources vs. taming a dino. YMMV depending on your servers settings and mods.
Lower south is super easy, you can beat even on foot, so doesn’t matter which dino you bring.
Upper south is a bit tricky, it has several long water paths so bary is preferable. Remember to bring scuba gear.
I personally prefer bary over other creatures, not only its traversability due to its thin size but also the speedy healing when killing fish if you can manage to find water pools. I can manage to beat every cave on the island (except those underwaters and snow cave) with a high level bary.
Out of the 10 caves on the Island, a high level imprinted baryonyx can clear 6 of them (barring the snow cave, 2 underwater caves and skylord cave which needs to be done on foot). I prefer to do the death island cave on a thyla as it doesn't take fall damage, but that still makes half the caves on the map which are done on a bary.
