Hi all,

Is anyone else getting this error when loading the game, a few seconds after getting to the main menu?

1. Go to the steam help menu, click system information and then copy paste all that info here so we can see what steam detects for your rig and any potential discrepancies.

2. If you are using modded content, list all mods by name and in the load order you are using.

3. If you are overclocking, using msi afterburner, 3rd party graphic enhancers etc then dont. They are known issue makers.

Start with those and lets see if we can eliminate any variables.

Due to the extremely vague nature of both of your complaints, saying "same" is very highly likely erroneous. As a general rule, do not piggy back onto other people's threads with your own issues. Make your own threads and follow the steps outlined in 1-3 AND additionally copy paste your -own- crash reports (Hint: UE4 crash reports may look the same to some but they do in fact vary.)

I have not overclocked recently, I do have a GSync monitor, but Nvidia did not push any updates. My game is Vanilla.

As for the error itself, it just started... had not updated the game, had not updated graphics drivers, no new windows updates (not that i had turned my pc off between it working and not...), nothing that I could see changed.

I am running a dedicated server on another computer in the same room, with same internet connect etc, the game hosts fine...

Let me know if you need anything more...

Thanks.

A number of users reported that the game is broken again after the last patch that fixed the invalid JSON error, with similar crash report like yours.

I use a similar setup as yours, however I didn't experience any troubles even though I have played the game for the entire afternoon and the game run smoothly. So there might be something more to be explored.

I didn't find any thing wrong with your specs, drivers are good. But one thing you can try is to make sure you run the game in 1080p since ark has never been optimised for resolution above that level, which, may or may not change your current situation.
The_Funk Nov 4, 2020 @ 11:28am
Thanks for that Stephen.

It generally crashes before i get a chance to click options.

I tried running it directly from my steam library (rather than shortcut on Desktop) and had the options to "Reset Game Resolution".

It now starts as a tiny windowed game in the middle of my screen, and still crashes before I reach anything on the main menu.

I had the JSON error on Monday night (2nd Nov), but closed it, and steam, restarted, steam updated and I got back in for the rest of the evening. This started some time between 12:00am on 3rd, and 6pm on 3rd Nov.

I don't have the option to roll back, that i can see at least... guess i'm waiting on 'the next fix'?

Thanks again.

Do you use VPN or similar? That's my reason, close to fix.
The_Funk Nov 4, 2020 @ 12:49pm
I haven't been using normally, but have tried basing myself in Ireland, Brazil, Australia, Hong Kong to name a few - still nothing.

Thanks for the thought though.

This error quite literally ruined my 100+ hr Single player Play through. I was transferring all of my gathering and other important dinos in the obelisk to the Center map when this error popped up and I lost all of my Dinos at the obelisk. The game rolled back, and all my dinos were removed from the Obelisk and are no where to be found. I havent used console commands at all in this playthrough, but I feel like I've earned a few at this point. My day is ruined.

I'm having this issue too - no idea how to fix it
The_Funk Nov 5, 2020 @ 4:26am
Update: I've installed ARK again on a new hard drive (glad I have Tb's free space!!) and get the same error. There's 3 of us playing on my server and we all crash on the main menu before we can click options, or join game...
Marshall_maz Nov 5, 2020 @ 4:34am
A friend of mine has the same issue since the last update. Game crashes at main menu before he can even click on anything in the menus. We haven't been able to find any fix.
Ryker Nov 6, 2020 @ 7:25pm
I'm almost positive I know what it is. There was a Win 10 update recently (10\20 Ver. 20H2). When Ark crashes, an error windows pop's up, says ShooterGame Failed then lists a bunch of Ark directories files. I had to roll back the update to the previous version. I completely forgot about it because I rolled it back right away. Go to Windows Updates -> Recovery. Choose Get Started on the 2nd option "Go back to the previous version of Windows 10". It will give you a warning, start the roll back and reboot. I'm confident this will solve the problem. There is ONLY a 10 day grace period to roll back, so hurry. You can always reinstall the update.

Just in case you need a reference on how to roll back.

According to this thread, adding this this the command to the game properties works.
-preventhibernation (It didn't work for me, I already had the command for a mod I use)

I have resolved it now - when the Json error came out, I followed instruction to add two lines to a host file (C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts).
This was only ever a temp fix for Json, but anyway, it was adding to my posted issue.

went back into the file, deleted the two lines I added, and now works a treat!
