Yes many play like this. Also you are not restricted to playing the 1300ish official servers and there are many good unofficial servers in the 50,000+ that are out there too if that was something you werent factoring on your consideration.
Single player has many different settings that allow you to do just about anything and change the game including making bosses soloable. You can also use modded content to alter how you play as well from the workshop.
As for maps, if you have all the dlc and this is your first experiences with the game, then the story canon order is: The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 which comes out next year.
If you do not care about cutscenes nor ascension(leveling by killing bosses) you can alternatively do the free dlc maps for some ascension benefits(not all with the paid dlcs mentioned) or even mod maker maps. The free dlcs btw were all mods bought out by the devs and turned into official dlcs for free. Ark has a very robust modding community because the devs pay 4k a month stipends to select modders and buy out mods and hired the makers as devs if it works out.
Ark is an extremely flexible game to play once you know all the admin commands and how to play in general but it may be a steep learning curve for you at first.
Just start on the island map and experientially learn how to survive. Use the wiki, dododex, youtube and here as resources..
Mods for this game are very important imho. At least Structures+. They add much QoL-features. (I think it's worth just for the auto open/close of doors alone...)
And SP-setting make this game much better for solo-play. But this is only possible if you start a game on your own. (may it be non-dedicatet MP oder real SP.)
So it's definitv playable solo. But you have to make your own goals. It's a sandbox-game after all...
Beware though: ALWAYS check, if your mods are in the loading-section, especially after a big patch. Often, mods are automatically released from that and you must include them again BEFORE you launch the actual game. If you don't, all mod-related items will vanish, incldung structures and their inventory.
Yes, absolutely.
I am not a picky person, I think all maps are awesome to play, they all have different gameplay and style, especially the official cannon dlcs. For the official non-cannon maps, although they don't have story, just gorgeously beautiful, worth exploring.
I have no issues playing SP.
Many pros like avoiding SP issues related to creatures or resource spawn. The only con I may think of is boss areana time limit(while SP doesn't have this limit) which can be solved by S+ Mod.
